In the Footsteps of Eleanor of Aquitaine: March 2013
http://www.eleanorfootsteps.blogspot.com/2013_03_01_archive.html
In the Footsteps of Eleanor of Aquitaine. Historical tour of northern France with author Sharon Kay Penman. June 3-13, 2011. Tuesday, March 26, 2013. Sunday, June 12, 2011. I didn't want to get up this morning. I could blame my comfy bed or the knowledge that this was our last day of touring. Dealing with the wrathful gazes of those I displaced was the only tense moment I experienced this entire week so really, I can't complain. Still feel like I have holes bored into my head, though. Mea culpa. Brasseri...

In the Footsteps of Eleanor of Aquitaine: Orléans
http://www.eleanorfootsteps.blogspot.com/2013/03/orleans.html
In the Footsteps of Eleanor of Aquitaine. Historical tour of northern France with author Sharon Kay Penman. June 3-13, 2011. Thursday, March 14, 2013. Saturday, June 11, 2011. We were originally meant to stay overnight in Angers but in order to cut travel time on our last day we were directed to the city of Orléans. We passed this unique and complex Europe Bridge spanning the Loire on the western edge of Orléans. Designed by architect Santiago Calatrava, the bridge opened in 2000 to much positive acclaim.
In the Footsteps of Eleanor of Aquitaine: October 2012

In the Footsteps of Eleanor of Aquitaine. Historical tour of northern France with author Sharon Kay Penman. June 3-13, 2011. Thursday, October 25, 2012. Thursday, June 9, 2011. We had free time that evening to explore Fontevraud. We'd all made advance arrangements through our fabulous tour manager for dinner so as to avoid last night's mealtime fiascos. After all, it wasn't like we could cook up a meal in the abbey kitchen for ourselves. It's a little, uhm, rustic. The kitchen was restored in the early 2...
In the Footsteps of Eleanor of Aquitaine: Chapelle Sainte-Radegonde de Chinon

In the Footsteps of Eleanor of Aquitaine. Historical tour of northern France with author Sharon Kay Penman. June 3-13, 2011. Tuesday, February 19, 2013. Chapelle Sainte-Radegonde de Chinon. Friday, June 10, 2011. Having lost my boutique innocence in Chinon, I cheerily boarded the bus. I was basking in a splash of sun like a well-contented cat when it was announced that we had more Plantagenet exploring to do. Off the bus, then, and out for a walk along some troglodyte dwellings high above the city. You c...

The Historical Dilettante: Forgotten History: John Brashear
http://historicaldilettante.blogspot.com/2012/12/forgotten-history-john-brashear.html
Saturday, December 15, 2012. Forgotten History: John Brashear. Though my soul may set in darkness;. It will rise in perfect light;. I have loved the stars too fondly. To be fearful of the night. I recently attended a Heinz History Center Ambassador Lecture Series presentation about Western Pennsylvanian John Brashear. Samuel Pierpont Langley. Source: Wikipedia Commons. Such accessibility was a critical concern, for as Brashear stated in his autobiography:. Remains active to this day. Brashear's star shon...

The Historical Dilettante: Forgotten History: Father James Renshaw Cox
http://historicaldilettante.blogspot.com/2013/09/forgotten-history-father-james-renshaw_2.html
Monday, September 2, 2013. Forgotten History: Father James Renshaw Cox. Money is only a medium of exchange. It was never intended to be power.". The recent anniversary of the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom and today's Labor Day march through downtown Pittsburgh streets got me musing about another proud march for cause, orchestrated in 1932 by Father James Renshaw Cox, Pittsburgh's original outspoken pro-Labor priest. St Patrick Church, third building on the site, circa 1865-1935. Cox began...

The Historical Dilettante: Those Twelve Days of Christmas
http://historicaldilettante.blogspot.com/2012/12/those-twelve-days-of-christmas.html
Monday, December 31, 2012. Those Twelve Days of Christmas. It's the seventh day of Christmas. Do you know where your swans are swimming? I look forward to reading the Christmas Price Index. Now I'll grant you that the Twelve Days begs to be parodied. Mock-worthy as it is, there exist countless versions with lyrics of various degrees of cleverness. Despite that, I'm going on record to state that it's a childhood favorite of mine. Journey of the Magi, Benozzo Gozzoli,. Here in the States we've largely lost...

Thursday, May 28, 2015. Forgotten History: quiet, pleasant and self-possessed Sarah Jane Negley Mellon. If you're from Pittsburgh, you know the name Mellon. The name seeped into my consciousness at an astonishingly early age. I vividly recall being 5 years old and placing my chin on a walnut handrail after clambering up a marble step to peer into display cases at the Carnegie Museum. Scaife miniature dioramas, Carnegie Museum of Art. Scaife miniature dioramas, Carnegie Museum of Art. And of course I coul...

The Historical Dilettante: Forgotten History: Allegheny Arsenal Explosion
http://historicaldilettante.blogspot.com/2012/09/forgotten-history-allegheny-arsenal_18.html
Tuesday, September 18, 2012. Forgotten History: Allegheny Arsenal Explosion. This was one of those moments parents dread, because I couldn't definitively answer her question. Historical precedent dictates that even life-changing events will be remembered differently as time passes. And the Battle of Antietam even pushed the Arsenal story to page 3 in local newspapers. Still, the Arsenal deaths were. The worst loss of life of the Civil War, and the memories of those victims deserve to be honored. The Alle...

The Historical Dilettante: February 2013
http://historicaldilettante.blogspot.com/2013_02_01_archive.html
Tuesday, February 26, 2013. Earlier this month my daughter had to write a poem for her English class about a 20th century hero. Her assignment got me thinking about heroism and courage. Sarah “Madam C.J.” Walker,. All kinds of bravery there. I suppose any school-girl essay on the nature of heroism is bound to reach this same point of lauding unknown, unsung heroes. But aside from being prompted by my daughter's essay topic, I have an especial reason for thinking about this concept. Gail and I connected o...

The Historical Dilettante: May 2014
http://historicaldilettante.blogspot.com/2014_05_01_archive.html
Friday, May 9, 2014. How does Pittsburgh remember Andrew Carnegie? Let's talk about art, accessibility, Pittsburgh, and Andrew Carnegie. Whose art is it, anyway? Internet parlor games are usually annoying, but there's one called Occupy Facebook With Art. That caught my eye. By registering a 'like' to a lead post, you get assigned an artist and must share an art by that artist on your own Timeline, along with some variation of a caption. Seems like a harmless enough diversion, right? But I have to admit t...

Monday, March 18, 2013. Of Kings and Nerds. Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you're aware that within the last month the remains of a medieval king of England named Richard, found under a car park in Leicester, have been positively identified by Serious Scientific Methods. And that’s when the real fun started (she said sarcastically). And when are those nephews of his going to come in from playing outside? I’ve stayed out of the related online fray for the most part. Uhm, okay, I did sni...Unsight...
