Some kids refuse to use school toilets because they are too scary! This sensitivity provides an opportunity in architecture to create a school setting that might help kids feel more secure and comfortable and also maybe inspire a bit of day dreaming. During the planning stages, there was considerable pressure from the authorities to reduce the ‘scale and bulk’ of the proposal. But is this correct? The building is about events and staging those events. It’s a building that houses large gatherings. It’s an important building that serves a specific social function. Area: 1,079 m. St James’ Primary School. What better way to signal to children that school is about discovery, adventure and learning than to have the main administration building invite you to do just that. The tower proclaims the entry and centre of the school while the serpentine tail with its juxtaposed framed eyes, trails off to provide a type of mute surveillance of the playing fields. St John Vianney Primary School. It’s difficult to play handball on sloping concrete. A school situated on a sloping site causes problems, not just for handball! There’s an uneasiness created that can affect the children and disassociate the internal spaces from the outside areas. Here we have split the library and then returned the outdoor covered area over tiered seating, effectively biting into and grabbing the site. A sense of ownership and belonging is re-established.
