It reminds me of the famous Steinbeck quote, “Socialism never took root in America because the poor see themselves not as an exploited proletariat but as temporarily embarrassed millionaires.” An end to ableism will only occur when we stop seeing illness or health/ability/mobility issues as temporary embarrassments.
