Elena de Roo - New Zealand Children's Writer & Poet
http://www.elenaderoo.com/poems.html
For me, writing poetry is pure pleasure. I love playing with the words until I find exactly the right ones to make the rhythm, form, tone and feeling all come together to work as a whole. Several of my poems, like the ones below, have been published in the School Magazine. Touchdown, May 2011. Touchdown, May 2009. Countdown, August 2007. Countdown, March 2008. Excitingly, seven of my poems have been selected for A Treasury of NZ Children's Poetry. Here are some poems of mine from the Treasury.

Twelve-year-old September is determined to choose an adventurous name from the Name Bank not like all her friends, who are named after flowers or trees. But she soon discovers she has no choice, unless she can win an ancient and mysterious board game. And every roll of the dice leads her further into danger. It was also during rewriting that the underlying theme of control versus individuality began to emerge. Growing up, I remember feeling how unfair it was how little say, as a child, you had over d...

I have wanted to be a writer forever, it just took me a long time to figure it out. It all started at age three, when I had my first poem published in the children's pages of the local paper. More than forty years later:. Serendipitously, a friend had just enrolled in a children's writing course; I decided to put my name down as well and have never looked back. The Rain Train (illustrated by Brian Lovelock) Walker Books Australia, 2010. The Name at the End of the Ladder - Walker Books Australia 2014.

I write stories and poems and sometimes even story-poems. I like quirky plots and characters - an evil blender; a kleptomaniacal cat; a girl with an insatiable appetite for adventure and red berry jelly, all make an appearance in my stories. This website gives you some more information about the kinds of things I write and a bit about myself as well. Be warned, there is nothing realistic about my stories whatsoever! A popular online junior fiction novel written side by side with New Zealand children.

Sleuthing and Writing Skills. Saturday, September 8, 2012. A Theory and a Big Bang. While he was swimming, Mote was thinking hard. What was with all these weird animal clues the saboteur was leaving, warning them of his plans for ruining the games? It was almost like he was playing chicken with them. Wait a minute. Playing chicken? The egg-throwing event was about to begin! Could Byrd be the one doing all this? Debussy came running into the arena, waving her arms and screaming. "There's a grenade! Mote g...

Sleuthing and Writing Skills. Sunday, August 26, 2012. Priscilla Byrd flew in and – with a vigour unusual in one so close to retirement – jumped in front of the bear and pointed a handgun. Inspector Barker bounded in next, taking up a similar stance several metres away. Last came Inspector Le Zard, hefting an assault rifle to firing position. 8216;Where’s Captain Pejalmer? 8217; whispered Mote to Deb. His sister didn't take her eyes off the scene below. ‘Sh! 8216;Ready …’ called Byrd. A slim woman in a t...
