May 2, 2014. The Makah are the only tribe in the United States with a treaty expressly guaranteeing the right to whale. The tribe’s whaling tradition dates back at least 1,500 years. Tribal members voluntarily stopped hunting whales in the late 1920s when they became endangered. When the animals came off the endangered species list in 1994, the tribe again sought to exercise its right to whale. There was an unsuccessful whale hunt in 2000 before court cases put the tribe’s hunts on hold indefinitely.

Art work in the Makah Culture. April 25, 2014. June 3, 2014. Makah material culture consisted mainly of wood, especially cedar. The inner bark could be beaten to make soft clothing, woven together with feathers or dog wool to make colorful pancho-like jackets. The versatility of cedar allowed for women to develope a highly prized skill of basket weaving. Makah Women also made textiles using dog wool or cordage made of strips of birdskin. The members of the Makah Tribe of Neah Bay gather and reunite with the members who have since moved away, to commemorate thousands of years of the Makah ancient culture and the anniversary of becoming citizens of the United States. S14 Northwest Costal Indians Blog. September 2, 2014. This weekend I had the opportunity to spend time in Tillamook and around Cape Meares. It was such an amazing experience to be able to hike around the land and see the beauty of the region. We hiked down to the ocean and searched for plant that would have been gathered by the tribe. At the time they had fostered 9 children in their home, 5 of the children are siblings.
