I spent one year serving as an Entwine Global Jewish Service Corps Fellow through JDC. I taught English, washed my clothes by hand, had less, did more. I realize adventure is the best way to learn. Elizabeth in Ethiopia: March 2013

http://www.elizabethexploring.blogspot.com/2013_03_01_archive.html

Tuesday, March 12, 2013. First time in months, just a slight shower. Sounded so nice on the roof, dampened the dusty roads and left the air feeling a bit cooler. Not something to get used to just yet but a very nice treat! Today is Max and my 2 year anniversary. We celebrated by sleeping in and doing some errands. We enjoyed a very nice dinner at 4 Sisters, our favorite restaurant on the edge of town. Then we fell asleep watching the Departed on my laptop. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

Elizabeth in Ethiopia: February 2013

http://www.elizabethexploring.blogspot.com/2013_02_01_archive.html

Tuesday, February 5, 2013. Photos from Axum and Lallibela. Stelae in Axum. The amount of rows you can see etched into the facade equals the number of bodies buried below. Interestingly, only 10% of Axum has been excavated. There's more to be discovered! Remains of Queen Sheba's compound. Tombstones, or stelae. The rough ones like this were typically used by the poor rather than the fancy smooth or carved structures. We visited a women's co-op in Axum. These hooks are horns. St George's church in Lallibela.

Yom Ha’Shoa Holocaust Remembrance Day יום הזכרון לשואה ולגבורה. April 8, 2013. If only I could push their young minds up and out of the abysses, and into the here and now. I’m stuck in it, and I don’t know what to do. Today’s marchers have the chance to make this day theirs, just as I did five years ago. I want to tell them to go forth and feel how powerful they are. Realize that the lives of so many of us are nothing short of miraculous. What is (more aptly, was) Czechoslovakia? How do they live their l...

Seeing the world through blueberry eyes. Skip to primary content. Skip to secondary content. Author Archives: Jen Berman. September 15, 2013. Where have I been? Where am I going? This year, I am serving as a volunteer for Ashalim, the department dealing with children and youth at risk. I hope to make a difference in the lives of youth ages 13 and up by aiding the national effort in Israel to lower dropout rates from high school. More info about my work coming soon. Meanwhile, check out Ashalim’s website. Which I will also hopefully have a hand in updating…soon! For those who are curious about where my fieldwork might take me, check out this article.
