Tuesday, 27 February 2018. Drops Dripped (Kapli kapali). I'm about the embark on War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy, one of the greatest of all books. I have been put off by the length, by the fact that I didn't think I would understand it, by all kinds of prejudices which I cannot explain. I thought it would be dull. There now. Wednesday, 28 January 2015. The Best Thing I Ever Wrote. The paperback of my book Far From My Father's House comes out on January 29th from Quercus. It is now available from Amazon as an ebook for 99p. Annie is the main woman in the story, the man is David Blake. This was the first time I had made a man so important in my books, his voice is as complete as hers and the publishers have acknowledged it in that the audio will be read by a man in a northern voice. Oh joy! That's me and that's why it's the be...

Sunday, 5 July 2015. Bitten, Burned and Burgered - How not to go on holiday. When I first announced to my friends that I was going on holiday. To Miami one said,. Do you know how hot it is? Top Miami hotels are very elegant, Liz.' Hmm. A great many people here speak Spanish as their first language so a very pale woman with a weird British accent is worrying. Miami is all about money. Even in Cheshire I have not see such an abidance of enormous flash and shiny cars. Alcohol is not a good idea with weather...

Friday, 4 July 2014. Why Can't The English ( or anybody else for that matter ) teach their children how to speak? If I have to listen to another sports person say 'you know' I may throw up! I would give the poor little buggers elocution lessons. Oh God, that sounds posh. We must teach our children how to talk to one another, how to get up and speak in front of others, how to breathe. And please, mostly women, do stop talking down to your lap and try to project without shrieking. If you can't be John McEn...

Sunday, 23 August 2015. Doctor of the High Fells. A work of fiction is a team effort so next time you see the author think of all the other poor buggers who have to put with it all as well. There is an element of luck with any published book. Sometimes it just takes off. We live in hope. The genres change, people have new ideas, some people have old-new ideas and it's difficult to tell which way the wind is blowing or whether you can make it blow your way. So I do hope you might read and like it and if n...

Monday, 23 March 2015. Ten things I hate and love because it will make me feel better to put them down here. Like the film which is great but I hate. 1 Those dreadful cheery letters people send you to tell you how wonderful their lives are. Liars. 2 Evenings. After Eggheads there is this big scary nothingness which I fill with work, wine and food. For some reason summers are worse than dark nights. And can afford an Aga but don't know how to use one. 9 Religion. It denigrates women. 2 Good homemade food,...

A Notebook for Eileen

http://anotebookforeileen.blogspot.com/2015/07/july-2015-2015-has-not-been-best-of.html

A Notebook for Eileen. Saturday, 25 July 2015. 2015 has not been the best of summers. And yet in spite of the inclement weather or perhaps even because of it. The countryside has been alive with colour - an absolute delight. A few weeks ago the lanes and footpaths behind my home were shoulder-high with Cow Parsley (or Old Man’s Tobacco as I knew it when I was a child.) May-blossom brightened the hedges and the fields were carpeted with buttercups. Obviously the sea air suits it. In this air balloon.

http://anotebookforeileen.blogspot.com/2015_02_01_archive.html

A Notebook for Eileen. Thursday, 19 February 2015. I feel like the Queen in Alice in Wonderland who said "They're Painting the Roses Red" except that in my case it would be "Painting the Hyacinths Pink.". A few weeks ago I bought this bowl already planted with very healthy-looking Hyacinth bulbs. Its label promised that the flowers would be pink which meant they'd match my cushions . Obviously somebody made a mistake! My next remark should obviously be "Off with Their Heads.". A Notebook for Eileen.

Mini-Read: Homing The Carp. Monday, 10 August 2015. Sarah Hall’s The Wolf Border – a Writer’s Commentary. With my tendency towards insomnia I get to hear a lot of fragments of broadcast-radio in the early hours. Recently I heard an episode and a half of Sarah Hall’s novel. Great cover. Imagine the author name. But the story is so much.

A Notebook for Eileen. Thursday, 29 January 2015. Were 100 years old on January 12. This brought back so many memories of reading the little books aloud and sharing the stories with all the children I knew. When I looked on my shelves today I realised that I'd kept 22 of these delightful books and as I scanned through them I saw them not only as entertainment. But as social history as well. From "GOING TO SCHOOL". Children had milk in glass bottles at play-time. School meals were being served. Christmas ...

A Notebook for Eileen. Monday, 15 September 2014. By all these lovely tokens. September days are here,. With summer’s best of weather. And autumn’s best of cheer.". Helen Hunt Jackson, September. I wonder how many people enjoyed last week's sunsets as much as I did. From the back of my house I have wonderful views. Of the sun going down and only a short time later. I can walk to the front and see the moon rising above the rooftops. 730 pm The sun sinks lower and the sky turns orange. A Notebook for Eileen.

A Notebook for Eileen. Tuesday, 29 July 2014. One of the first posts I wrote on this Blog was about our family dogs - the elderly German Shepherd, Gypsy and lively young Shar Pei Winston. Sadly Gypsy had to be put to sleep yesterday afternoon. She had had a very happy life right to the end and given so much pleasure to her family for 13 years - her birthday was Christmas Day so it was always celebrated. Goodbye Gypsy. We'll all miss you. A Notebook for Eileen

http://anotebookforeileen.blogspot.com/2015/03/at-9-oclock-this-morning-i-watched.html

A Notebook for Eileen. Friday, 20 March 2015. At 9 o'clock this morning I watched the eclipse of the sun, simply and easily from the front windows of my own home. It was amazing and wonderful to see the moon gradually cover the sun until only a narrow sliver was left . I remember the last eclipse in 1999 and how I went into the country with some of the family and walked to the farthest edge of a big field to watch from there. We were impressed that day but no more so than I was today. A glimpse of the sun.

In a painting I want to say something comforting, as music is comforting. - Vincent Van Gogh. Nature contains the elements, in color and form, of all pictures . But the artist is born to pick, and choose, and group with science these elements, that the result may be beautiful. I enjoy painting and have been painting in the oil medium for a number of years. I have been fortunate to study and paint with a number of other artists whose work I admire.
