life in the land of morning calm

Friday, August 15, 2008. So now I’m back in the United States. I’ve been here for over two weeks and soon I’m heading back to work in Seoul for another year. Overall, it’s great to be home. It’s so easy: I speak the language and I understand the culture! I landed in LA and had a four-hour layover before flying into PDX and meeting my family. There are two things that struck me as I walked around the LAX terminal:. Suddenly the home economics teacher was in front of me. 8220;You will go? 8220;But this nor...

life in the land of morning calm: much better than may day

http://www.elizabethinkorea.blogspot.com/2008/06/much-better-than-may-day.html

Friday, June 6, 2008. Much better than may day. May was chock-full of holidays, both national days and special days for my school. Some of my favorites:. Teacher’s Day (national). Students (or, more generally, the Parent-Teacher Association) give small presents to teachers. At my school this meant we each got a corsage, a small yellow melon, two hallabongs (a citrus fruit native to Jeju), designer socks, and a piece of cake in a fancy Peter Rabbit-decorated box. And half of the day off!

An American in Aberystwyth: On football riots, and being the token American

http://caseyinwales.blogspot.com/2007/11/on-football-riots-and-being-token.html

An American in Aberystwyth. Sunday, November 18, 2007. On football riots, and being the token American. Yesterday I took what may end up being my last weekend trip here in Wales. I went to Cardiff, the capital city of Wales, not returning to Aberystwyth until late. Muff or Matthew McCabe. November 18, 2007 at 10:25 AM. I can honestly say I am glad I wasn't on that train! We had enough entertainment from students going to school in Birmingham on our ride to Aber that will last me for awhile! I wish I coul...

An American in Aberystwyth. Monday, December 17, 2007. Goodbye is not a good word". The greatest travel map you have ever seen. So I’m home. The end of three months in Wales, and elsewhere. After three days of traveling and running around London I arrived at PDX late last night, and now surrounded by piles of paper and with an unopened suitcase still in the corner, I’m writing the final entry in my blog of this trip. Thanks for reading, and best of luck to you all in the future. Laura flat 2 said. Most o...

Seeking Something: September 2007

http://maryanninchile.blogspot.com/2007_09_01_archive.html

Sunday, September 30, 2007. We spent three days in the amazing chunk of Chile called the Atacama Desert. Our hostel, in the tourist-student paradise town called San Pedro de Atacama, was entirely too awesome for the short sleeps we spent there. We ate lots of relatively tasty Chilean food, saw some September 18th celebrations, and took fantastic tours to beautiful and diverse landscapes, documented here in photos:. We also swam in hot springs on this tour! Wednesday, September 26, 2007. The coca tea, how...

Wednesday, October 24, 2007. I can't let it rule my life here, however difficult that might be. I'm leaving friday for a week in Buenas Aires (I'll see IH! And trying my best to change my outlook on life. No matter what I do to cheer myself up, though, it's always stressing me out in the background. I suppose only time and healing can really change that, but I'm in no hurry to just wait. Monday, October 22, 2007. A little bit of gangrene never hurt anyone. Today, I went to see a dermatologist to talk abo...

Wednesday, August 29, 2007. Let's talk about sex, baby. I'm consistently surprised by the lack of taboo in Chilean society, especially when it comes to sexuality. It wasn't even sunset. Many of the ISA students have had awfully uncomfortable sex talks with their families ( BC. Tuesday, August 28, 2007. Kitchen full of sunshine! Living room with dining room in the background. Seeking Something: November 2007

http://maryanninchile.blogspot.com/2007_11_01_archive.html

Tuesday, November 27, 2007. Favorite Things: The Market. This is the first entry in a series of things I love/will miss about Chile. Today, the market:. Despite my mother's consistent and caring reminders, I've avoided sunscreen fairly successfully for the majority of my self-dependent years. I hate the smell, I hate the feel, I hate the process of putting it on. My half-latina genes always did enough to get me tan without burning. Apparently, not in Chile. Sunday, November 25, 2007. http://maryanninchile.blogspot.com/2007_07_01_archive.html

Tuesday, July 31, 2007. Two Sets of Women. Last night was a pretty good night out in Chile overall. However, there was clearly one high and one low point, each punctuated by the Chilean women who caused them. Followed us out the door. Shouting her hatred after us. Quite a sour note on which to end the night. Monday, July 30, 2007. The bad news is it's by watching my own tv set. I've very much grown to enjoy the Travel and Living channel, with cooking and eating and skydiving shows, and watching US sitcom...

The warning labels on the back read like Truth ads, including descriptions of the chemicals as tar and rat poison. Wednesday, December 5, 2007. Favorite Things: Los Cerros.
