A Work in Progress: Elizabeth Merton's Blog: Ah-ha

http://www.elizabethsworkinprogress.blogspot.com/2014/11/ah-ha.html

A Work in Progress: Elizabeth Merton's Blog. This a blog that reflects upon teaching, students, and life in general. Thursday, November 27, 2014. It was supposed to go beautifully. Every detail had been considered. The reading was thought provoking, a perfectly aligned video clip was paused and ready, and well-crafted questions were asked. The only problem was that the students failed to realize how amazing the lesson was. What I have learned is that adaptability and focus on student need is the primary.

A Work in Progress: Elizabeth Merton's Blog: Staying positive

A Work in Progress: Elizabeth Merton's Blog. This a blog that reflects upon teaching, students, and life in general. Sunday, February 8, 2015. As a teacher, I sometimes encounter an identity crisis. This most often happens when a student questions some aspect of my approach (I'm working hard to develop a thicker skin). "Professor Merton's" defining features smudge and warp, leaving me wondering just what kind of teacher are you? However, at the end of the day, I forever and always carry the heart of an e...

A Work in Progress: Elizabeth Merton's Blog. This a blog that reflects upon teaching, students, and life in general. Friday, December 5, 2014. The following blog contains a heartwarming anecdote. Potential side effects include nausea, headache, and in extreme cases, temporarily high blood sugar levels. If you experience symptoms, discontinue reading and contact your physician immediately. I couldn't help myself. A grin spread over my face and I had to restrain myself from saying, "Tell me more.".

A Work in Progress: Elizabeth Merton's Blog. This a blog that reflects upon teaching, students, and life in general. Sunday, December 14, 2014. None-the-less, or perhaps because I dislike it so much, I spend an inordinate amount of time thinking about how to respond to student work. I spend minutes tinkering over a question that I hope will lead them to a clearer line of thinking. I agonize over whether a problem is dire and needs to be underscored or would be better left alone. Eat the Yolk: March 2012

http://eattheyolk.blogspot.com/2012_03_01_archive.html

Just do it. You know you want to. Sunday, March 18, 2012. Triumphant, Uncomfortable, Still employed, and Groggy: A Week in Review. Looking back on my little post on living in the "discomfort zone," it seems like quite an optimistic rallying cry. I love getting the positive feedback, of course, and I'm overjoyed if it brought an ounce of happy to your life. It's good to be reminded that things can feel that right. So One week down. How's my list of resolutions going? Darn that hasty post! Got up during a ...

Eat the Yolk: February 2012

http://eattheyolk.blogspot.com/2012_02_01_archive.html

Just do it. You know you want to. Tuesday, February 28, 2012. It's What I Know. The school's absence policy is strict: two weeks of missed classes and you are out. Armed with this reassurance from the dean, I walked into class, prepared to go to the mat on this issue. As I left class, I felt myself slip into a familiar pattern of thinking: trapped between my "take a hard line" self and my "Yes! Limitless compassion for all! I walk past my own self-loathing. Like I walk past animals in the zoo. So, fine, ...

Just do it. You know you want to. Saturday, October 29, 2011. Yoga babies. No, it's not an attempt to rip off the ever-growing yoga clothing industry, nor did I witness some strange new Mommy-and-Me mutation. It's the perfect description for the class I had today. And this one: "I notice that this student takes a creative approach to the conventions of English! Ahh, a beginner's mind can be a welcome relief to the drudgery of the day. You know those classes that seem to have bad energy? Writing is like m...

Eat the Yolk: January 2012

http://eattheyolk.blogspot.com/2012_01_01_archive.html

Just do it. You know you want to. Thursday, January 26, 2012. I've been surprised by a lot of what life's thrown at me. Relationships, births, deaths, adventurous travels- all of it, so unexpected. And yet, so tiny on the map. But after reading Emily Rapp's lovely article over on The Rumpus. Thanks to my dear friends for letting those roots mingle. Tuesday, January 24, 2012. Be aware. Be VERY aware. I really wish I were eating a pomelo.". Is there any limit to the utter insanity of mental chatter? We do ...

Eat the Yolk: September 2011

http://eattheyolk.blogspot.com/2011_09_01_archive.html

Just do it. You know you want to. Sunday, September 25, 2011. But I've been haunted by this quote by poet W.S. Merwin since I heard it two weeks ago. "Little breath, breathe me gently," he writes, "for I am a river I am trying to cross. Ah So much here. I think we all know what it's like to experience anxiety and fear. What happens when we perceive something as being fearful? Are not. It's like something is breathing us. Maybe that's why noticing it can be so centering.). Sunday, September 4, 2011. Don't...

Sharpening My Tongue: January 2015

http://sharpeningmytongue.blogspot.com/2015_01_01_archive.html

Tuesday, January 27, 2015. Zombies, and Faulkner, and Letters, oh my! This semester, I am teaching two hybrid 116 classes, so both of those are new for me! Prior to this, I taught basic writing courses at UCSD, tutor training at Mesa, and a couple 115 courses. Because I was a new teacher, my friends helped me out A LOT as I pieced together course schedules, reading materials, and lesson plans. I don't know what I would do without my colleagues. And the students will be writing their research papers on ou...

Eat the Yolk: April 2012

http://eattheyolk.blogspot.com/2012_04_01_archive.html

Just do it. You know you want to. Sunday, April 29, 2012. I want to talk about payoffs. Every month, I put $100 into a retirement account. The hope is that 35 years from now I will withdraw those monthly donations, and that with interest I'll have accumulated a nice little nest egg. (Do you hear the sound of me blithely ignoring the stock market as it drips steadily downward? Ignorance is bliss.). One thing I think we can all agree on, though. The destination can be pretty sweet. Jamul, Hollenbeck Canyon.

Eat the Yolk: March 2014

http://eattheyolk.blogspot.com/2014_03_01_archive.html

Just do it. You know you want to. Monday, March 3, 2014. It was with a heavy heart that I emailed my Bikram instructor to let her know that I was going to take a hiatus from her studio. Now, I've never been a fan of Bikram himself. I used to look upon him with bemusement, as one might a cute but useless puppy with a rug-piddling problem: "Hey! Great example of a charismatic narcissist who somehow managed to line up some yoga postures in a way that works well for many people.". I had also heard about his ...

Sharpening My Tongue: December 2014

http://sharpeningmytongue.blogspot.com/2014_12_01_archive.html

Thursday, December 25, 2014. So last night, before the festivities, I finished posting my grades. And today, after festivities, I entered in my SLOs. I think I'm officially on break. :) It feels good. See you all soon! Saturday, December 20, 2014. But we all know that when it's break time, amiright? I have a pile of books that I have started.and I haven't finished. I need to read them. I mean, I want to read them, but I really just, for the sake of being me for just a little bit, I NEED. Is what I'm look...
