You are here: Home. April 12, 2010. In April 2009, I took a workshop on designing fabrics from Sharon Alderman at the Conference of Northern California Handweavers. For the workshop, we were asked to come up with an idea for a finished piece, so we could choose yarns and design the fabric to suit the finished work. I took them to the workshop, and wove this on my 24-shaft AVL Workshop Dobby Loom:. Sample woven at CNCH. Not the most romantic proposal, but…the wedding was on! I started sampling for the dre...

Meet the Blogging Team. Saturday, December 5, 2009. Ask the Editor: Tips for self-editing burnout. Asks: "What are some helpful tips on how an author can train their own editing eye even when they've read their own work a million times? But by page four or five I am seduced once again by the story’s central drama. The way to counter this is to engage your inner critic while simultaneously disrupting your reading response. To do this I find it imperative that I not. And see if the prose works without them...

Meet the Blogging Team. Thursday, May 14, 2015. The Writer and the Secret Fan. Photo by Cara Lopez Lee. When I read Lisa See’s Snow Flower and the Secret Fan. I was captivated by the idea of two women sharing a history by exchanging notes in the folds of a fan. I teach young writers for Denver’s Lighthouse Writers Workshop. And I decided to create an exercise using fans. The opening of a fan is a vivid metaphor for storytelling. Here’s my favorite part of the fan metaphor: fans are fun! Then I asked them...

Meet the Blogging Team. Tuesday, May 19, 2015. So there you are, clattering away at the keyboard and filling page after page with enthralling dialogue and vivid imagery. Suddenly, your fingers halt as your brain wrestles with a question of grammar. You have a sentence in mind, but you’re not quite sure if the phrasing is acceptable. What do you do? Do you forge ahead, risking potential editorial wrath? Do you take the not-quite-easy way out and re-write the entire line, thus avoiding grammatical conflict?
