Everyday Adventures: Snapshot
http://www.littlelifeadventures.com/2012/08/snapshot.html
This little life of mine. Thursday, August 30, 2012. So apparently there is some sort of convention on t.v? Just kidding. Sort of. I was kind of vaguely aware of its timing/existence but wasn't paying much attention. Today, though, a surprising number of both patients and doctors mentioned it.). This afternoon in the neurology clinic, I visited with a patient who has Parkinson's Disease and his wife. They were just lovely. Or just somethin' else? Seein' two of those guys is just way too much! I love thos...

Everyday Adventures: How to Vacation
http://www.littlelifeadventures.com/2013/05/how-to-vacation.html
This little life of mine. Tuesday, May 14, 2013. It has already been, like, almost a whole MONTH since I actually took this vacation and I still haven't really had time to blog about it. (OMG, time. As soon as I finished taking Step 2, I hit the brakes hard, determined to relax the crap out of my time off before my next rotation. I immediately dove into the stack of books that had been waiting for me. YOU WORKED SO HARD, YOU DESERVE THIS! SO PROUD OF YOU! Passed Step 1. So Step 2 was kinda do-or-die ...

Everyday Adventures: April 2013
http://www.littlelifeadventures.com/2013_04_01_archive.html
This little life of mine. Tuesday, April 9, 2013. I Think I Can. Less than a day to go. So ready to be done with this:. Photo credit: my roommate Lamya. Pre-boards mani-pedis with friends today:. And vacation to look forward to next week. Taking deep breaths. Friday, April 5, 2013. My work is loving the world. Here the sunflowers, there the hummingbird —. Equal seekers of sweetness. Here the quickening yeast; there the blue plums. Here the clam deep in the speckled sand. Are my boots old? Is my coat torn?

Everyday Adventures: Snapshot
http://www.littlelifeadventures.com/2012/07/snapshot.html
This little life of mine. Wednesday, July 11, 2012. The elevator door opened onto the main floor. I took a left, feet dragging ever so slightly, shoulders noticeably stooped after a day on my feet. It hadn't even an especially long day. We had rounded in the morning, then there had been a couple of surgery cases, nothing major, then we saw a couple of patients and then my resident said I could go by mid-afternoon. Go enjoy your life! Do I go home and study? How will I not succumb to my overwhelming.

Everyday Adventures: What I Wish I Had Done
http://www.littlelifeadventures.com/2013/02/what-i-wish-i-had-done.html
This little life of mine. Friday, February 22, 2013. What I Wish I Had Done. I wish I had held his hand more. One week from finishing my third year of medical school, I just had my first patient die. Mr Wallace* had stage IV adenocarcinoma of the lung. He was living independently, grocery shopping in his electric-powered wheelchair. He had been on chemotherapy and radiation and he was all set for another round of palliative treatment when he came in to the hospital. He would ignore me and keep mumbling a...

Everyday Adventures: Trauma
http://www.littlelifeadventures.com/2012/12/trauma.html
This little life of mine. Thursday, December 6, 2012. I don't care what surgery service you're on, even if it's not trauma - it's ALL. Surgery is trauma for everyone involved. Even an uncomplicated, routine case involves fairly significant trauma for the patient. Don't be fooled into thinking otherwise - it is very carefully controlled trauma, but trauma nonetheless. Minimally invasive? Easy to become desensitized to the violence of it. But yikes. Surgery is no joke. Surgery is trauma physically and emot...

Everyday Adventures: Reflection
http://www.littlelifeadventures.com/2012/04/reflection.html
This little life of mine. Wednesday, April 18, 2012. The surgeon introduced herself, and the wife spoke first. Her words rushed over each other. The surgeon all but rolled her eyes as she opened the patient’s chart on the computer in the room. 8220;Alright, when do you want to schedule the surgery? 8220;So, will you be the one doing the surgery? 8221; the wife asked. The surgeon nodded over her shoulder, saying yes without glancing up from the chart. 8220;Oh, we have just been so worried. Such was the co...
