Emergent Dharma: the helping path
http://emergentdharma.blogspot.com/2010/07/helping-path.html
A few weeks ago our Zen priest made the point that the Buddhist path is a "helping path." It's all about helping others, he said. It's so easy to maintain an inward looking, self-focused practice: my. Daily meditation, my. Mental suffering, my. Challenges. etc. So I'm trying to work on this more broad aspect of the Buddhist path. This is an older clip from the Internets, but it's one I really like. Often the knowledge that someone else cares is an even bigger gift than the immediate aid. Buddha had a pen!
Emergent Dharma: Buddhists are Brave, the Brave are Buddhists
http://emergentdharma.blogspot.com/2010/10/buddhists-are-brave-brave-are-buddhists.html
Buddhists are Brave, the Brave are Buddhists. 65279; Don't be angry because the world is unkind;. Dont be angry because the world is unkind; Have compassion. What a wonderful statement! I will add it to my list of personal cliches. And its even more relevant when the world has been unkind to me. Then I need self-compassion rather than anger at the other. April 14, 2013 at 6:54 PM. The evil mouth of men/women, breaks the rod of iron ( Gossip will kill the best reputation ) . It is always the words that we speak harm others the most. It is exceptionally bad when our words causes schism between our teacher and Dharma brothers and sisters. This is an example of how during Buddhas time schism is being caused by Devadatta. Emergent Dharma: How much aware are you?
http://emergentdharma.blogspot.com/2011/01/how-much-aware-are-you.html
How much aware are you? I calculate that I stay aware, in the best of days, a 5% of my waking time. Most of it while I walk the dogs, or while I wait for something. The rest of the time I have seconds, or even fractions of seconds of awareness in which I'm conscious of what's happening, amidst a continuous state of just experiencing life the normal way. I wonder how are things for you folks, how much aware are you on average. Let's throw in some figures, shall we? Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

Buddhism Sucks: December 2010
http://buddhismsucks.blogspot.com/2010_12_01_archive.html
SO I'M GONNA WRITE ABOUT SOMETHING ELSE! Friday, December 17, 2010. Review of Rebel Buddha. I used to be the type of “Buddhist” guy that bought EVERY new book released by Snow Lion and Wisdom. At one point, I think I probably had like two-hundred books on my shelf. A few years ago, I came to my senses, went through all my books, and probably got rid of 90% of them by putting them in boxes and setting them out in the lobby of my apartment building. I mean, who the hell am I trying to impress here? Notwith...

http://buddhasareasexual.blogspot.com/2010/03/critical-thinking-modern-rape.html
Buddha had a pen! What does my penis have to do with this very moment? Critical Thinking and Modern Rape. Please, let's stop raping. Anonymous, probably me. This post is more of a rant about society and culture than anything else, though I put some effort into making the ideas clear. If you'd like to raise your consciousness about this topic I suggest you read Rape Culture 101. By Melissa at Shakesville. Let's start with the basics :. These are the apparatuses. That was a weak example. More to the pu...

Sunday, September 15, 2013. Lost my Cushion, Lost my Mind. Lost my Cushion, lost my Mind. As I was having these feeling come up there was also a struggle one side of me thought “Huh, this is not very Zen of me to be feeling this way everything is empty and I should not be so attached” the other thought was “This is real and I should allow my feelings to flow naturally have the experience then let it go”. Which thought is truly Zen? 1 The truth of dukkha (suffering, anxiety, unsatisfactoriness).

Sunday, December 22, 2013. Moonshine (Distillation of Consciousness and the Dharma of Duck Dynasty). Well it has a lot to do with consciousness and very little to do with Duck Dynasty. However, I do have something to say about Phil Robinson’s comments that I’ll mention at the end of this blog post. I could be lying just so you keep reading. Either way you’ll have to read entire post to find out. So what is the distillation of consciousness, and why do it? Is awareness a soul? Does it die with our body?

SO I'M GONNA WRITE ABOUT SOMETHING ELSE! Friday, July 8, 2011. The 35 Buddhas of Confession. Sounds awfully Catholic, doesn't it? Problem is, I don't think you could fit all 35 of these brightly-colored, omniscient beings into one of those little closet-sized confessionals - plus, there'd be no room for prostrations! Most of the literature available to us and most of the teachers we have access to come from one of these perspectives:. The "traditional" Asian, monastic perspective. They end up being so go...

SO I'M GONNA WRITE ABOUT SOMETHING ELSE! Tuesday, August 23, 2011. So I've been doing a lot of thinking lately. I'd like to turn this blog into a more active commentary on society at large - but viewed through my own unique perspective on Buddhism. What that would mean for readers is that I'd continue to comment on topics related to Buddhism, but I'd also write about other topics that I find of interest. A totally random picture of Rick James for your enjoyment! Posted by John Christopher Harrison. I saw...

I feel guilty about everything! There are many reasons why I've been silent, other than my general malaise toward Buddhism. It's been a tough year of teaching, I was finishing up my Master's degree, AND I just found out that my wife and I are having twins! Not an actual picture of my twins*. In "Confession of a Buddhist Atheist". Ex-monk Stephen Batchelor explains that in his view being a modern non-denominational Buddhist involves collecting some favorite Buddhist quotes and pushing off in your raft into the river of life. I have my own collection of Buddhist quotes. There are thirteen, and the first quote is possibly all I need. To me, it's pretty much Buddhism in one sentence:. I vow to accept every situation as it arises.". I find this very helpful. Links to this post. Links to this post.

July 25, 2015. I came upon this post i wrote some time ago…and it continues to be my intention…a wonderful and timely reminder! We are not held back by the love we didn’t receive in the past, but by the love we’re not extending in the present. Marianne Williamson. Writing is one of my on-going practices…continuing to open to the possibility that what is wanting to be written has in fact little to do with me, but certainly my willingness has much to do with me. As you stop living from those old stories an...
