Needless to say, my process is very labor-intensive. “You must have a lot of patience” is a comment I have heard frequently over the years. At first I thought, “Do they mean it only takes patience? Emeryville Celebration of the Arts. All photos except the first one were taken by my husband Charles Brandes. This is the original photograph of my husband (in green jacket) and his cousin. It was taken at the Getty Museum in Los Angeles. After cropping and flipping the image in Photoshop, I traced the figures in Illustrator (an Adobe digital drawing program) so that I have a rough drawing with accurate proportions. I place translucent paper over the computer drawing and then redraw the image to refine it.
