The thing with april was that his teacher was noticing that nicks father was abusing him. to me i think that it was nice that mrs. higgens was sending home notes about how great that nick was of a student. to make his father think good things about him. The reason that she did that was to make it so his father will stopp hurtin him. and for a teacher to do that and not go right to his father and say stopp abusing him that would be strange.

Also i dont agree how his father is treat nick like trash. he came into his bedroom and punched him because his friends had beer. what was that about? These albums include photos from both the daara in Dakar where we have been filming talibes for our documentary as well as 2 villages where we spent the last 1-2 weeks interviewing the parents of talibes who have sent their children to live in the cities where they beg in the streets in order to collect money for the marabout who then uses the money to pay rent, bills, provide for his own family, etc.

Tuesday, August 31, 2004. Next time I write I'll be in Senegal! OK, so this is my last entry from the U.S. I'm heading off to Senegal tonight, and I'm really excited. I have no idea what i'm getting myself into, which makes me a bit nervous, but it also kinda makes it more of an adventure. I'm so glad that i'll have Jamie with me! I've talked with some of the other people who are going and they seem awesome! As far as I can tell, it's going to be a great semester. I'll miss you guys! It was so much fun!

Sunday, November 28, 2004. Self Conscious in Senegal. So I am here in Thies working on my independ. project, and things are going great! I have visited about 15 daaras (the run down shacks where the little talibe kids live under the 'supervision' of their marabout (islamic religious leader) . It has been crazy! Yesterday I went to a daara that had 83 talibe and ONE Marabout! Can you imagine being responsible for all those kids! Plus, can you imagine how much money this marabout is getting from the talibe?
