First Africa Update! - Adventures in Addis

http://emilyjoynickles.livejournal.com/724.html

Camden, Danielle, Samantha and I made it to Addis Ababa safe, sound and exhausted after approximately 30 hours of travel time. I spent most of the travel time in a glorious benadryl induced coma due to a massive mosquito that, ironically enough, attacked my arm at home, two days before. Entering the malaria risk zone. Why someone would check bags for Ethiopia and never put them on a plane is beyond me. But clearly they were wrong. She said she was able to see my blonde head from across the customs line, ...

Update 2 - Adventures in Addis

http://emilyjoynickles.livejournal.com/979.html

Brief Update: Yesterday Cam and Danielle finally got her luggage from the airport! We were a little concerned since someone pick pocketed her baggage claim, but luckily there wasn’t too much hassle in claiming her belongings. Everyone here is so kind and helpful in helping us figure out the city, translate, and take care of our needs here. We feel so welcome and definitely over-appreciated, but everyone here is helping so much with what could be a hard transition. It’ll be really hard to leave without sn...

three week / first trip out of the city! update - Adventures in Addis

http://emilyjoynickles.livejournal.com/1707.html

Three week / first trip out of the city! This week was definitely one of the fastest of my life. It's really hard to believe that weâ ve been in Ethiopia for almost a month now. It' s a good mental check to make sure we are taking advantage of every minute, because even though a year sounds like a really time right now, it' s made up of only eleven months that will go by as fast and faster as this one did. I have to be okay with not always knowing my next step, but I really love planning. The administrat...

Teaching Update 22.10.2008 - Adventures in Addis

http://emilyjoynickles.livejournal.com/2104.html

Teaching Update 22.10.2008. The kids have such funny phrases. They all have the same sayings, I don’t know where they learned some of them or who taught them, but they all say the funniest things. To double space their papers they say “Miss, may I jump lines? Rdquo; To ask if they are suppose to copy something from the board, they ask “Shall we write such as this? Rdquo; ……dead silence……. “That’s right! Can you make a circle with your finger? Rdquo; “What animal is this? What does a cow say?

Entropy in Action

Thursday, June 21, 2012. Paperwork's done.now what? Our home study is finally complete and we have the approval letter from Illinois DCFS, which only took about 2 or 3 weeks; not bad. This means that our Haiti dossier is complete, and since Scott is now 35, we officially qualify for a child referral. Please keep praying for us, but more especially for the children in Haiti! Tuesday, June 12, 2012. Haiti and the Hague Convention. Monday, April 16, 2012. The last piece of paperwork finally arrived! For an ...

The Magic of Childhood

The Magic of Childhood. I think my work so far is coming together well, because I have a varied range of working with media, and varied ideas on what I want to focus on in childhood, from imaginations and magic to memries and the past. The “Ning Nang Nong” is one poem of Spike Milligan’s nonsense poems, it’s tongue twisting and I don’t know how many times I have read it. The illustrations for each poem in the book I have are very child like and quirky.

January 2, 2017. Fell in love with the most amazing person I’ve ever met, and finished the year with him by my side. Went on so many adventures, tried new things, and explored. Accepted defeat when I got denied from grad school, but learned from the experience and bettered myself. Discovered what my true passion in life is, and followed that dream. Applied to grad school and GOT ACCEPTED. Got a job that is giving me amazing experience in the field I will eventually work in. Surround myself with people th...

Thank God Im A Virgin. You Are Not A Princess. Shut Up and Sing. Shaking your fist at God and man can be intensely satisfying for a while. Emily Joy Poetry — The Spoken Word of Emily Joy

WE ARE NOT THE WORST THINGS WE HAVE EVER DONE. WE ARE NOT OUR DOUBTS. I’m a spoken word poet, yoga-teacher-in-training, and creative justice enthusiast. I create art for people who are tired of the status quo and the same old stale spiritual answers and long for a faith and a life that is beautiful, authentic, and contributes to the sum total of justice and goodness in the world. I’m glad you’re here. THIS IS THE LAST POEM I WILL EVER WRITE ABOUT YOU. I MEAN IT THIS TIME, I'M SERIOUS. February 12, 2018.
