Sometimes The Sun Shines Cold…. I wrote this short story as part of a writing course I did not too long ago. It’s a bit on the rough-and-ready side and I haven’t edited it much, but that was supposed to be the point. I don’t usually write short stories much at all really and so this was a real challenge actually. I usually want to over elaborate things but I wasn’t given an option here! The flesh was wrong. On Dog’s Dinner. It’s official. I win. My first camp is over. My target was 50K. My final word count was 71,375. I’ve validated it so now it’s official. I won. I’m about 65% through my outline so I’m not done yet, but I’ve broken the back of a story that’s been sitting on the back-burner for almost thirty years so I’m feeling immensely proud of myself right now. Time for tea and a jam tart. I know how to celebrate. July 31, 2014. No really i won. July 30, 2014. You should be writing. July 29, 2014. The L...

On Dog’s Dinner. Bookshop Memories: Willie Rushton. Inspired by this article. I know he wasn’t the most famous person in the world but I’d grown up listening to him on the radio and watching him on the telly. He was clever and funny, irreverent and marvellous. I wish I had been able to speak, to think of something amusing and memorable to entertain him with or perhaps had the wherewithal to treat him to a round or two of Mornington Crescent. June 23, 2014. I thought I would be a teacher. I spent a lo...

On Dog’s Dinner. For eighteen months Derek had attempted to cajole a smile out of stone cold Claire. He’d been counting. He’d tried small talk. Will the carpark ever reopen? Will the leaky roof ever get fixed, or must customers forever dodge traffic cones with their squeaky trolleys? And whatever happened to the deli counter? Claire glanced along the line. He was here again, the one who wittered endlessly about all sorts of nonsense. She was young and beautiful once. Full of laughter. He thought, as thei...

On Dog’s Dinner. I’m not sure what any of this means, but I am working on my writing habits. Maybe by the end of next year I’ll have written more words than I wrote this year. Or maybe I’ll be over my relatively recent obsession with counting words. December 15, 2014. 5 thoughts on “ Shocked Myself. Now choose one and begin to refine it. Quality, not quantity. On Dog’s Dinner. Film tips: Back to the Future. A good story should have conflict throughout. There should be an overriding problem to be solved, in this case, getting back to the future. But along the way there should be lots of smaller goals that are scuppered. Progress should always be tempered by setbacks. If it isn’t, you’ve got no story. You attempt to escape certain death in 1985 only to find yourself in 1955 with a shotgun in your face, trying to escape certain death. Again. Marty’s skateboarding...

On Dog’s Dinner. It seems pointless waffling on about it when I’ve already hit my target but I’m up to 60K now. I’ve got my winner banner. She had spilled sugar and not cleaned up. Did she want an ant invasion? The sugar stuck to his fingers, coarse and gritty. He couldn’t stand the feel of it.
