Welcome to emmablackwood.com. Emma Blackwood is a contemporary fine artist who creates sensual life-paintings on large scale canvases. Her work is immediate and compelling, enhanced by her dynamic application of paint using a palette knife to strike vigorous marks onto the canvas. The paintings are by turn sensitive and provocative they seek to spotlight the complexities of human existence: the moments of reflection, the insecurities, the passions, the doubts and exhilarations of life.

When one looks at the naked body in its vulnerability and strength, inevitably the complexities of one’s own ‘internal theatre’ are brought along to the viewing our own humanity, relationships and experience. Emma Blackwood’s work seeks to explore this theatre and thereby play with the space between the viewer and the viewed.

Emma Blackwood has had a portfolio career in the arts that has spanned the past 12 years. Whilst still completing her Fine Art and English Literature degree from Leeds University she was the main (and youngest) exhibitor in York City Art Gallery and subsequently gained her first solo show in York. She went on to achieve a First Class Honours in her degree and undertook many private commissions, most notably a 6’ x 6’ canvas of a male nude featured in Elle Decoration. Download Emma's CV (pdf).
