Music, Musings, and Martial Arts: The Ethical Teacher
http://bencdawkins.blogspot.com/2014/11/the-ethical-teacher.html
Saturday, November 29, 2014. For the last few months, I've been actively engaged in solo training. For most martial artists, if they train long enough, there will be a period of time where responsibilities or proximity to home schools prohibit regular in-class training. Of the martial artists I know who have moved away from their home schools, a large percentage end of leaving their training. It's so easy to do so. A week without class becomes a month, a year, and then longer. They are by no means defini...

Music, Musings, and Martial Arts: Practice Makes Progress
http://bencdawkins.blogspot.com/2014/05/practice-makes-progress.html
Monday, May 12, 2014. In his book Outliers. Malcolm Gladwell repeatedly mentions the “10,000 hour rule” in his analysis of the factors related to high levels of success. The rule basically states that 10,000 hours of practice are required to acquire real expertise and success in any skill. He writes that typically, it takes about ten years to reach that 10,000 hour mark. I found this idea interesting in its potential application with martial arts. Obviously, the answer needs to be “yes.”.

Music, Musings, and Martial Arts: March 2014
http://bencdawkins.blogspot.com/2014_03_01_archive.html
Monday, March 31, 2014. There are a great many benefits to martial arts training, and perhaps the most difficult aspect of communicating the love of martial arts to a non-practitioner is that most of those dividends are not easily demonstrable or quantifiable. So, we have grade and rank testing. In those situations, we can measure the partially unmeasurable. It’s not perfect, but it is traditional in the best possible way. Kyu yellow-stripe belt before the solid yellow. In this case, the first test anxie...

Music, Musings, and Martial Arts: October 2013
http://bencdawkins.blogspot.com/2013_10_01_archive.html
Monday, October 21, 2013. In this Winter of 2011, a few months after I’d started training in Yoshukai, I took a course at AKF Athens called CIT, Certified Instructor Training. Kyu yellow belt, it felt a little early to be taking a course in martial arts instruction, but I’ve enjoyed teaching ever since finishing undergrad, and I was curious by the process. An easy thing to forget at higher kyu-grade ranks is, at one point or another, we were all pretty raw when it came to martial arts. So, back to CIT.

Music, Musings, and Martial Arts: July 2013

Saturday, July 27, 2013. It's a Habit: Operation Shodan Fit Week 6 Results. Remember at the very beginning of this phase of training when I said I had read that it would take about 3 weeks to break a habit and start a new one? Well, continued study suggested that it was more like six. Now that I've reached that threshold in my own personal training, I have to say I agree. I honestly don't feel right if I'm not working out on any given day (except for my rest day each week). The habit has set in! Interest...

Music, Musings, and Martial Arts: April 2014

Friday, April 18, 2014. Quantity Vs. Quality. I draw a lot of instantaneous inspiration from quotes in The Karate Kid. I know in a lot of ways it's cheesy 80s fluff, but I also think that the script served as a vehicle for a lot of Robert Mark Kamen's philosophy on the martial arts. One such scene has Daniel sitting with Mr. Miyagi eating his birthday cake, and Daniel remarks that he's worried he doesn't know enough karate for the tournament. That struck me as an excellent reminder for all of us. And it ...
