Why yoga?

Children today are under a lot of stress. Homework, pressure to compete with other children, over-scheduling - it all adds up. Kids can turn to yoga to help them relax. The trick is to get beyond just doing the posture. Trying to get them to think about what the postures mean, to become like the postures - strong and confident like a warrior, for example, or centered like a tree.

In class we always start with grounding exercises. To calm down, to ‘be present’, to let go of everything that was before they entered the class. Every yoga class has a theme and around this theme we do the yoga poses, the meditation and the vizualisations. The poses can be individual poses or poses kids do together. Part of every yoga class is relaxation. Some children have a difficult time closing their eyes while others can't get enough. And then there is a cup of tea and that ends the yoga class.

Yoga can be practised by every child. There is no need to be very flexible or lenient. Every child can do the poses. There is no competition, so if one child can bend over and touch the ground and the other one cannot, that is no problem at all. If children have special needs, it is best to consult the yoga teacher if attending class is possible. There are two yoga classes. One is for children aged 7-12 and the other one for children aged 12-18.
