Brett Walkenhorst: The Abolition of Man
http://brettwalkenhorst.blogspot.com/2010/05/abolition-of-man.html
Thursday, May 13, 2010. The Abolition of Man. I finished reading The Abolition of Man. Last night and I wish I could convey the power of that third and last chapter of the book. I feel like I've been able to glimpse the power and beauty of what Lewis was trying to say, but I still don't have the vocabulary necessary to completely understand and internalize it. If you understand it, please explain it to me. I will make a lame attempt to explain part of it here. Of viewing colors, by a discussion of the ae...

Brett Walkenhorst: The Gifts of Imperfection
http://brettwalkenhorst.blogspot.com/2014/03/the-gifts-of-imperfection.html
Monday, March 31, 2014. The Gifts of Imperfection. I recently read 'The Gifts of Imperfection' by Bren é. Brown This is the same woman whose TED talk. I shared in a previous post. The book is brilliant. Courage: to share your heart, embrace vulnerability, and fully feel both positive and negative emotions. Compassion: to embrace others in their imperfections, recognizing that we've all been there, we're all doing the best we can, and we're all in this together. She talks a lot about shame and I think a l...

Brett Walkenhorst: Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance
http://brettwalkenhorst.blogspot.com/2015/01/zen-and-art-of-motorcycle-maintenance.html
Tuesday, January 27, 2015. Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. There was a book I heard about in the early 90s that I never bothered to pick up. I'm glad I didn't. I wouldn't have understood it and most likely wouldn't have appreciated it. What I find so interesting about the story is his own misconceptions of the purpose of the journey. A major part of his journey began as he studied the word Quality. Later Excellence from the Greek Arete, which is often translated as Virtue. But Qual...Brett Wal...

Brett Walkenhorst: My Tomboys
http://brettwalkenhorst.blogspot.com/2013/10/my-tomboys.html
Monday, October 7, 2013. My youngest told me a few days ago that she wished she were a boy. I asked her why. Her response:. Child: "So I could be an awesome dad like you someday.". Dad's heart instantly melts]. Dad (a little haltingly, trying to catch up without a solid heart): "Thank you! That's really sweet of you honey. But you know, you can grow up to be an awesome mom instead.". Child: "Yeah, I'll grow up to be like mommy. Girls pretty much rock.". Dad (smiling): "Yeah, they pretty much do.". Brett ...

Brett Walkenhorst: Disney World
http://brettwalkenhorst.blogspot.com/2014/09/disney-world.html
Tuesday, September 23, 2014. We just got back from a trip to Orlando where we spent three days at Disney World. It's amazing how expensive it was, but it was really fun. We took a couple days to relax between park visits. One day, we went to Downtown Disney to look around shops and play. The Lego shop was a big hit with the kids. Another day, we went to the beach and that was probably my favorite part. There is something magical about the beach for me. It's a place for me to de-stress and connect...After...

Brett Walkenhorst: Lila
http://brettwalkenhorst.blogspot.com/2015/02/lila.html
Sunday, February 15, 2015. I recently posted about a book called Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. By Robert M. Pirsig. I loved it. So I immediately started reading the author's next book called Lila. I finished it the night before last. The big downer in all this is that the author only wrote two books and I want to read more of his thoughts. And then he proceeds to show the reader just how much more clearly they can see with this new model of reality. I have no sure method for finding truth, b...
