Wit and Catharsis: Parents Are Accidentally Funny
http://generalchemistrylaboratory.blogspot.com/2007/07/parents-are-accidentally-funny.html
Tuesday, July 24, 2007. Parents Are Accidentally Funny. I would like to take this opportunity to make fun of my parents and, potentially, many of their peers, as more than a few of my friends have voiced similar observations. We have noted a distinctly robotic, cold nature in their email communications, especially when we are profoundly far from home. The further away you are, the more brief the emails are. You're lucky if you get complete sentences. I am not exaggerating. Or from my time here:. I am not...

Wit and Catharsis: Iron Fist in a Velvet Glove
http://generalchemistrylaboratory.blogspot.com/2007/01/iron-fist-in-velvet-glove.html
Wednesday, January 31, 2007. Iron Fist in a Velvet Glove. This weekend on the crowded subway, there was a man standing in the middle of our car peddling women's gloves. They were black and velvety and they had a ring of leopard fur around the cuff. Very retired-woman-chic. A few old women shoved past me to plunk down a few bucks so they could look like a million. As the train continued down the line, the crowd grew more sparse. I stood and watched two old men sitting next to each other. They were. By thi...

Wit and Catharsis: Mall Walkers and Mother God
http://generalchemistrylaboratory.blogspot.com/2007/08/mall-walkers-and-mother-god.html
Thursday, August 02, 2007. Mall Walkers and Mother God. Since March, I have been accosted countless times by a group of proselytizing maniacs that lie in wait in every convenient and neccesary place - shopping centers, buses, parks, restaurants, subways, and train stations. Most of the crazies do not speak any English, yet they have been sent out to target Westerners. Those that can speak English are deceptive and misleading. This is an account of my favorite, and most awful encounter with them:. Make yo...

Wit and Catharsis: Power Ranger Magic Force
http://generalchemistrylaboratory.blogspot.com/2007/03/power-ranger-magic-force.html
Saturday, March 17, 2007. Power Ranger Magic Force. You may wonder what exactly I do at school, so I will show you:. That's right. I draw poor pictures of "Powah Lay-eenjuh Majeek Posuuh" for little boys. Sure, we. Supposed to be discussing what a slide cover is and how to measure an earthworm, but the Red Ranger was just so much cooler. I think 3rd grade children are the most perfect. They are old enough to be a lot of fun, but not old enough to give you a hard time. March 20, 2007 6:53 PM. View my comp...

Wit and Catharsis: Sleep RX
http://generalchemistrylaboratory.blogspot.com/2007/05/sleep-rx.html
Friday, May 18, 2007. I have been awake this Saturday morning since 6 am I don't know why. I'm just awake. I'm pretty sure my body is slowly reverting back to U.S. time because I doze off almost everyday in class around 3 or 4. This is possible because I teach "listening comprehension," which means I put in a tape and am allowed to stop working for a few minutes. Though I sit just across the mini-table from them, mere inches from their faces, I have developed several techniques to make my nap time.

Wit and Catharsis: Report Cards.....C+
http://generalchemistrylaboratory.blogspot.com/2006/09/report-cardsc.html
Thursday, September 07, 2006. Last week, I had to make my first report cards. For the little kids, we aren’t allowed to give any criticism. We can only write positive comments, and sometimes you really have to stretch it. There’s quite a difference between what I wrote and what I was actually thinking. Ellen is a sweet girl and is fairly attentive. She tries very hard to learn new material, and with continued hard work, she will progress quickly. I wanted to write:. I wanted to write:. I wanted to write:.

Wit and Catharsis: Baked in Sexism
http://generalchemistrylaboratory.blogspot.com/2014/05/baked-in-sexism.html
Tuesday, May 20, 2014. It's no secret. I work with unbalanced people. They aren't unbalanced in a bemusing, kooky way where they have unruly hair, and maybe talk about about Criss Angel or insist you watch youtube videos that don't involve hilarious animals. They're unbalanced in a bitter, angry, controlling, you-really-should-see-a-medical-professional sort of way. And then there are things co-workers do that are so offensive, that by pointing them out to the offender, they. I would give them the benefi...

Wit and Catharsis: Lunch in My Car - Episode 3
http://generalchemistrylaboratory.blogspot.com/2014/04/lunch-in-my-car-episode-3.html
Friday, April 11, 2014. Lunch in My Car - Episode 3. I was pretty excited about lunch today. While living in Austin, I discovered one of the world's greatest foods: the Galaxy Cafe fish wrap. I had concocted what I thought to be a pretty accurate knock off, including the unbeatable jalapeno-lime sauce. I grabbed my lunch out of the fridge and headed for an open breezy spot for Lunch in My Car. I parked, opened my wrap and dug in, quickly made aware that my concoction was a poor excuse for the real thing.

Wit and Catharsis: Death Metal Junky
http://generalchemistrylaboratory.blogspot.com/2012/11/death-metal-junky.html
Friday, November 30, 2012. Two of my friends, Jori and Angela are high school teachers. One of their students is in a Christian death metal/scream band, and, as they are cool teachers, they were invited to come to their concert. Angela and Jori invited me to go and because I thought it sounded hilarious and fun, I agreed to go. Outside the concert, kids dressed in black are milling around. Had I known then that this was a sign of things to come, I probably would have stayed in the car. Boys simultaneousl...
