Wednesday, May 14, 2008. I met Ellen Hopkins (New York Times Bestseller) at the 2008 SCBWI Writer's Retreat in Temecula, California. Of the things I admire about her is how she views her responsibility to readers. Not just to write them a good book to read, but also to provide understanding to the questions they have about life. Readers have written Ellen saying that her books saved their lives.literally. For more info on Ellen Hopkins and her books click here. Posted by Melissa O'Reilly.

Saturday, March 22, 2008. Another blog draft lost in my archives. I brushed off the dust and decided to post it, even though it's a year old. And just like last year, I had an awesome birthday, celebrating it with my niece. And like that Shake 'n Bake commercial, I'll be able to say, "And I helped! After my husband took me to dinner (at The Melting Pot—YUMMY! For my birthday, we ventured up to the hospital. The nephews were, of course, as adorable as could be. Then my five-year-old nephew, Riley, had to ...

Tuesday, November 18, 2008. I CAN NOW CHECK THESE BOOKS OFF MY TO-READ LIST. Because of Winn Dixie. Actually this isn't the first time I've read this. But it's just such a great book a person can't help but read it again.and again. And again. Check out the movie based on the book, too. Both are charming. Dave Matthews played a great Otis! By the way, I love Kate DiCamillo's Mercy Watson books. Mercy is a pig who gets herself into all kinds of predicaments. The Summer of Cotton Candy. I had to try very ha...

Melissa O'Reilly: Tip from an editor...
http://meloreilly.blogspot.com/2008/01/tip-from-editor.html
Saturday, January 10, 2009. Tip from an editor. During the SCBWI writer's conference in Temecula, California, editor Nancy Conescu said that finding an editor is a matter of matchmaking. Since you don't marry the first guy you meet, it's likely that your book won't sell to the first editor who reads it. (Paraphrased of course). Because for me, jeans are the hardest fit to find. It could take me months of going to different stores and trying on different brands and sizes. Ugh! It's worse than a root canal!

Friday, December 28, 2007. We celebrated our first Christmas in San Diego. Despite the handful of times I cried—I've been a bit more emotional than I thought—over missing everyone back in KC, Mike and I had a great Christmas together. As it turns out, Santa loves the ocean, too. We spied him hanging out at the Del Mar Lifeguard headquarters. And apparently, Santa doesn't just ride in a sleigh. Santa surfs! Friday, April 25, 2008. Grandma, I love you forever. L woman I am hugging went home to Jesus this week. It has been an emotional last few days. When someone leaves an imprint on your life, like my grandma did mine, grieving heaven's gain is inevitable. She blessed so many people, touched so many lives. I am fortunate mine was one of them. Her latest emails always ended with this: "I will see you soon.". Thank you, God, because I know eventually I will. Posted by Melissa O'Reilly. Friday, April 11, 2008.
