The Cogitating Christian: May 2009

Sunday, May 31, 2009. My goat meal - Nyama Choma. Read below for the description. Today is the Day! Well, I haven’t had a chance to give you some insight into our African meal. We went to a restaurant in West L.A. called Ngoma. Funny thing is that when we walked up to the door, they had a banner out front that reads “Food from Obama’s Father’s House.” So my first thought was, did they ship it? Food From Obama's Daddy's House. Friday, May 22, 2009. An African Airline Adventure. I’ll be wishing we we...

The Cogitating Christian: June 2012

Friday, June 1, 2012. No June Gloom Here! Today marks the start of my 10. Year of being on staff at Church of the Canyons. It’s amazing how time flies. I absolutely love what I do. Ministry to college kids is still so very exciting to me. It is one of those times in their lives that you can help walk them through decision making, the ups and downs, and the joys and challenges of life. I got asked just the other day by a student if I was going to do this the rest of my life. It’s always a joy to see...

The Cogitating Christian: The Mourning Fast that will become Joyfilled Feasts!

Friday, July 27, 2012. The Mourning Fast that will become Joyfilled Feasts! Most Christians are probably unaware that today is one of the most significant holy days on the Jewish calendar, the fast of the fifth month or often known as “Tish B’Av.”. This fast commemorates 8 national disasters for the Jewish people according to tradition. These disasters happened all on the same day. Here are some of them. What a very sad day indeed and not one by coincidence. But imagine several distinctive events that co...

The Cogitating Christian: The Fun with Feasts
http://thecogitatingchristian.blogspot.com/2012/05/fun-with-feasts.html
Monday, May 28, 2012. The Fun with Feasts. You get to have a day off, hang out with friends and usually BBQ like today (Memorial Day) or have some type of abundant spread on the table (like Thanksgiving). And with it also comes some type of remembrance or celebration. That’s the fun with feasts. Unfortunately, because many Christians have crispy pages that happen to coincide with the OT, the feasts are largely unknown or ignored. Yet these OT feasts have great significance for even the NT. The first four...

Saturday, May 28, 2011. The Lord is Faith-E-Ful. One of the common songs sung here is about God's faithfulness. Picture if you will, a large gathering of African believers singing in an accent - "The Lord is Faith- E- Ful." It has a sense of present distress and a longing for God knowing that He is faithful to His children. One thing I am certain of is that the Lord is Faith- E- Ful to complete the work He has started in them. Friday, May 27, 2011. When the Lights Go out. Wednesday, May 25, 2011. I was s...

Friday, July 17, 2009. Marijuana, the Christian and California. Why are drugs wrong or more pointedly, why is the use of illegal drugs(defining illegal drugs as “pot,” “lsd,” “crack”, “cocaine,” etc.) wrong for the Christian? Many Christians I talk with seem to point to the fact that drugs such as Marijuana are wrong for the Christian because it is illegal to use them and because it does damage to the body that is the “holy” Temple. What if our society removes the illegal aspect? What would Christians do?

Monday, May 28, 2012. What's Shavuot gotta do with me? The feast of Shavuot (pronounced Shav – oo – ot) is one of the 7 feasts found in Leviticus 23. Shavuot comes from the Hebrew term “weeks” which is a major part of the feast, the counting of 7 weeks. Most Christians know this feast by its Greek name, Pentecost. This feast counts fifty days from the Sabbath of the Passover and Unleavened Bread festival. Hence the Greek name Pentecost which means “fifty.”. While Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Brea...
