Todd and Vishal's blog. Problem-Solving Hall of Fame! Self-referential Paradoxes, Incompleteness and Fixed Points. July 11, 2010 in Category Theory. Who doesn’t like self-referential paradoxes? There is something about them that appeals to all and sundry. And, there is also a certain air of mystery associated with them, but when people talk about such paradoxes in a non-technical fashion indiscriminately, especially when dealing with Gödel’s incompleteness theorem. Then quite often it gets annoying!

Todd and Vishal's blog. Problem-Solving Hall of Fame! Platonic Solids and Euler’s Formula for Polyhedra. March 1, 2008 in Exposition. Is a solid which has a surface that consists of a number of polygonal faces. A polygon. Is a planar figure that is bounded by a closed path consisting of a finite sequence of straight line segments. For example, a cube or a tetrahedron is a polyhedron, while a triangle or a rectangle is a polygon. Now, the Euler characteristic. It turns out that for a simply connected.

Todd and Vishal's blog. Problem-Solving Hall of Fame! January 2, 2011 in Uncategorized. Happy New Year, everyone! Sorry, there hasn’t been much activity on this blog over the past few months, but 2011 will be the year when you can expect a lot more stuff to be posted as I find more time to do so. Todd has been busy on other sites/blogs, especially MathOverflow and n-Category Cafe, but he is still an author/admin on this blog. In 2010, there were 2. The busiest day of the year was January 20th with 196.

Todd and Vishal's blog. Problem-Solving Hall of Fame! Continued fraction for e. August 4, 2008 in Exposition. One of the rare pleasures of doing mathematics — not necessarily high-powered research-level mathematics, but casual fun stuff too — is finally getting an answer to a question tucked away at the back of one’s mind for years and years, sometimes decades. Let me give an example: ever since I was pretty young (early teens), I’ve loved continued fractions. 8221; or “I think I can prove thatR...
