A Walk In The Woods. March 3, 2014 at 10:55 am ( Uncategorized. One of the most pleasant aspects of taking an interest in bushcraft has been a developing interest in watching wildlife. In real terms that has meant birds more than anything. Mainly because birds are easier to watch (small mammals are far more secretive), but pleasure is found in whatever comes by. When working at home I often sit with my computer on a desk, upstairs, looking out over the back garden, as I am doing as I type this. We mainly...

A Walk In The Woods. Animals In The Woods. November 4, 2013 at 4:31 pm ( Uncategorized. Tags: Things We've Been Doing. On Saturday just gone Paul and myself had a day out in the woods. We were exploring some new woods I found not too far away. I’ve been there a couple of times myself trying to get a sense of the layout and bearings, but there was over half of it that I had yet to explore. So we set about exploring that…er…unexplored half. There were lots of chestnuts around so we snacked on them as we di...

A Walk In The Woods. Ruins of Romney Marsh. September 23, 2013 at 10:50 am ( Uncategorized. Tags: Things We've Been Doing. This is something I have been meaning to do for a while. Across the Romney Marshes there are several ruined medieval churches and I have been meaning to go for a walk across the marshes to find them. So that’s what I did the weekend just gone. For this route I used OS Explorer #125. Chapel Bank used to be known as Ebony Isle, and is located at the eastern tip of the Isle of Oxney.

A journal of Woodland days, thoughts, outdoor life and wooden hand carvings throughout the year. Sunday, 27 April 2014. Yesterday, I went to Yalding in Kent to attend a one star open canoe training day. Organised and administered by Kent Canoes. The backdrop to booking myself on the basic one star canoe course is that I'm off to Sweden canoeing for a week. A journal of Woodland days, thoughts, outdoor life and wooden hand carvings throughout the year. Wednesday, 22 April 2015. Enzo Nordic 95 Knife. The first thing to do was to ensure the tang would go through the brass bolster, so a bit of filing an the tang fitted perfectly. A buffer up on the polisher soon had it shining like a brass pin. Red and white fibres beginning to show. Time to apply the outline of my design for the handle using the cardboard template I had made earlier, generally applied to either...

A journal of Woodland days, thoughts, outdoor life and wooden hand carvings throughout the year. Saturday, 25 October 2014. Spalted Birch Knife Handle - Polar 77 Blade. After my recent success with the Yew handle. I decided to take the original blade a Polar 77 out of the deer antler I had placed it in a few weeks ago. Mark the shape of the tang from the blade. Cut out using a rotary tool. Slot for the blade finished. Basic sanding using drum on a drill press. Eventually you get to this stage. The handle i...
