Akiyoshidai Plateau is Japan's largest karst plateau, and has been designated a quasi-national park (area: 4,502 hectares) and Special Natural Monument (area: 1,384 hectares). The Akiyoshi limestone that composes the Akiyoshidai Plateau was formed about three hundred million years ago when a coral reef heaved upward as the result of movements in the earth's crust. One property of limestone is that it dissolves in rainwater. From that property, a uniquely eroded landscape (karst landscape) was created.

Located at the northeastern corner of Akiyoshidai Plateau Quasi-National Park, Taishodo Cave has been called the "Cattle Hiding Cave" since ancient times. That is because, it is said, a villager hid his cattle inside the cave during wars and civil wars, because he was afraid they would be stolen. To the cave entrance via the "Road of Romance," a "wisteria trellis" passageway made of spectacular marble columns. Also, utilizing music and voice, the Magceiver (talking guides) guides visitors through the cave.

Kagekiyodo Cave is a limestone cavern in which Heike Warlord Taira-no-Kagekiyo, who lost at the Battle of Dannoura, is said to have hidden about 800 years ago. The cave's growth stopped during the middle stage; thus, it features semicylindrical portions and many areas in which the ceiling is relatively low. Inside the cave there are features named after Kagekiyo and many coral fossils, and the ceilings and walls are amazingly beautiful, as if decorated with works of art. No reservation is necessary. ...

Under the Akiyoshidai Plateau, there are countless caves known as "limestone caverns" formed by erosion of the limestone. Of those numerous caves, the largest is Akiyoshido Cave. This gobo (burdock) grows in the distinctively red soil of the karst region. It features a soft flesh, abundant nutritional value, and nice scent. The Akiyoshidai Plateau has no rivers. Rain collects in dolines (sinkholes) and other depressions in the ground surface, and percolates into the ground. There it transforms into spring water and reappears on the earth's surface.
