People or persons??? – English with Grace

A few weeks ago a student asked me if, when referring to more than one person, she should use the word people. Honestly, I was stumped! I think I always use people. 8230; and most mother-tongue speakers I talk with use people. In fact, I only really remember seeing the word persons. In written form, like in elevators.
