thwap's schoolyard: harper Attacks Wynne, Notley
http://thwapschoolyard.blogspot.com/2015/08/harper-attacks-wynne-notley.html
Thursday, August 6, 2015. Harper Attacks Wynne, Notley. They were actually good people. Unfair to compare them with Conservatives. A political spat that erupted this week between Conservative Leader Stephen Harper and the Alberta and Ontario premiers is being seen by some as a calculated move on Harper's part to shore up his traditional party base. In the first place, it was the Alberta PC's who were the disaster that was resoundingly rejected by Albertans. Just compare the results of Alberta's "free...

The Prison Notebook of Maximón: Securitizing aid relief - What is the injustice being perpetrated?
http://theprisonnotebook.blogspot.com/2010/01/securitizing-aid-relief-what-is.html
Securitizing aid relief - What is the injustice being perpetrated? I'm very nervous about Canada's deployment of 1000 troops. Now in Haiti, the line is we have to prevent riots before the aid can be effectively delivered but the problem is that the riots emerge because the aid is not reaching people for many reasons, but certainly including this security mentality. With aid being turned away at the airport by the US so that US military planes can land with more troops I have to wonder about this process.

The Prison Notebook of Maximón: October 2009
http://theprisonnotebook.blogspot.com/2009_10_01_archive.html
In an unfortunate irony, I am restarting a blog that's last post was a celebration of Honduras' joining of ALBA with a post about Otto Reich's latest imperialist diatribe article printed in Foreign Policy on why Obama should support a military coup in Honduras. The article is here: Honduras is an Opportunity, And the US shouldn't squander it. By Otto Reich, Foreign Policy, 27 October 2009. But I've saved you some time by summarizing the article. You are expected to respond, OMG NOT CHAVEZ!

Just look at what they have done with the life of Thomas Young and remember the names of the politicians who rather than debate the Iraq War mouthed the lies of President Bush. PBS' Bill Moyers Journal, the most authentic reporting I can find on American television, recently spotlighted the important documentary Body of War and interviewed Donahue and Spiro. Please watch it in two parts, available online here: Bill Moyers: Body of War interview. Website for Body of War is here. There are two contexts tha...

thwap's schoolyard: The Juggernaut
http://thwapschoolyard.blogspot.com/2015/07/the-juggernaut.html
Friday, July 31, 2015. Lots of progressives tell me about all of the victories they win. "We got them to stop this or that." "We got 10,000 people in the streets against this bill." "We defended these rights.". But in my mind, what I see is the inexorable juggernaut of self-destructive hegemony rumbling on its way, pretty much indifferent to all the battles being carried out by the tiny figures on its surface. Underhanded hollowing out of Canada: What Conservatives do best. Here is a horribly bad deal, never trust a single thing that comes out of this Conservative government - its the lesson of the past 4 years. In particular, the Ontario wing of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) and the Council of Canadians criticize the deal for giving permanent and unrestricted foreign access to publicly funded contracts that supply schools, universities, social services and hospitals. This deal runs right into ...

Between Heaven and Hell: Life in Rio 2016. Rio de Janeiro is without doubt the most beautiful and most dangerous city to host the Olympics. Picture the beautiful people on the stunning beaches of Copacabana, framed by the green Pão do Açúcar rising out of the water and the Sambadrome filled with dancers during Carnival. Contrast those images with stereotypical imaginaries of the poverty of favelas—informal housing areas or “slums.” Made infamous by films like City of God. And Elite Squad,. Rio's Olympic ...
