On June 2, 2014, the Environmental Protection Agency proposed the Clean Power Plan. This landmark regulation seeks to cut carbon emissions by 30% by 2030, and is a key part of the President’s Climate Action Plan. But the fight isn’t over yet! The EPA is accepting public comments on the plan through October 16, and the Clean Power Plan could be even stronger.

On November 9th, Co-Presidents Michael Diamond and Morgan Goldberg were honored on the field during the home football game against the University of Florida. SPEAR had been named the greenest group on campus in the annual competition sponsored by Waste Management, Vanderbilt Athletics and the Vanderbilt Sustainability and Environmental Management Office. On Saturday, March 14th, SPEAR participated in Tennessee’s initiative to plant 50,000 trees in one hour across the state! SPEAR volunteered with the Cumberland River Compact and contributed over 400 trees along Mill Creek to this glorious green day of success. After 53 years of service, the coal plant on Vanderbilt’s campus has shut off for good. The plant has converted entirely to natural gas which will reduce the carbon footprint of the plant by over 40%. Natural gas is not.
