The Equatorials and Samoa

The Equatorials and Samoa. Sunday, February 12, 2006. 11 05S x 171 04W Due to weather considerations around Tutuila, we decided to steam 200 miles north to Swains Island in the hope of better weather. Our hopes have been rewarded and we have seen sun for the first time in a week. The best visibility we have had so far. It is INCREDIBLE! Did I say that? The current population of the island . 5! Underwater was just as amazing! Visibity was near 175 feet! Well, that's all for now. Stay tuned. It has rained ...

The Equatorials and Samoa: The Lagoon at Johnston

http://www.equatorials.blogspot.com/2006/01/lagoon-at-johnston.html

The Equatorials and Samoa. Sunday, January 22, 2006. The Lagoon at Johnston. We were towing along the inside of the reef in the lagoon, which is much more sheltered than the forereef. Some of the Acropora table corals were 6-8 feet across. It was wonderful. Visibility was good, it was pretty warm, much better. Hopefully the same will hold true for tomorrow. The Equatorials and Samoa: The Wall

http://www.equatorials.blogspot.com/2006/01/wall.html

The Equatorials and Samoa. Sunday, January 29, 2006. While tiring, our first dive today was probably one of my best tows EVER. The water was clear and the west side of Howland island is as steep a wall as I have ever seen! Posted by oceanben @ 1:32 PM. The Lagoon at Johnston.

The Equatorials and Samoa: Samoa Bound

http://www.equatorials.blogspot.com/2006/02/samoa-bound.html

The Equatorials and Samoa. Sunday, February 05, 2006. It has been a few days since I have written, but suffice it to say that we have crossed the equator and are bound for Samoa. The islands of Howland and Baker were spectacular and some of the best diving I have done. The anemones and clown fish around Baker were particularly touching (the photo shows an anemonefish ( Amphiprion chrysopterus. Posted by oceanben @ 5:51 AM. The Lagoon at Johnston.

The Equatorials and Samoa: Change of Plans

http://www.equatorials.blogspot.com/2006/01/change-of-plans.html

The Equatorials and Samoa. Wednesday, January 25, 2006. To appear out of the gloom. Thankfully nothing did, but we were greeted by a school of 25-30 jacks as we neared the end of our survey. They trailed behind us for the last ten or so minutes, no doubt confused by our presence. Posted by oceanben @ 6:44 PM. The Lagoon at Johnston.

Pacific Adventures: Mail Buoy

http://kerry-pacificadventures.blogspot.com/2012/03/mail-buoy.html

Friday, March 9, 2012. In the very near future, we may experience a loss of Internet for a week or so. (How will we ever survive? During previous ASRAMP cruises, we've lost our Internet connection for a period of time while nearing the Equator. The particular satellite that provides our Internet service is in a geostationary orbit above the Equator, and apparently our satellite dish antenna has a problem pointing straight up (or has a blocked view when doing so or some such reason). Holy crabs, Baker!

Pacific Adventures: September 2010

http://kerry-pacificadventures.blogspot.com/2010_09_01_archive.html

Saturday, September 18, 2010. Sunset is my favorite time of day. I try to catch it as often as possible when I am out on the ship. The past few days have had some very pretty ones, and I couldn't help but take some pictures. Pearl and Hermes Atoll, day 4. The water was so calm I could photograph even the smallest of ripples. I thought this one might make a nice background for my computer. The moon rising over Pearl and Hermes Atoll. Green Island, Kure Atoll just prior to sunset today. Kure Atoll, day 1.

Wednesday, March 21, 2012. Holy crabs, Baker! Day One at Baker was a fairly typical ARMS day: Launch the small boat at 0745; first dive over by 0930; back to the ship by 1000; clean gear; lunch at 1100; start processing at 1130; break for a quick dinner at 17:00, and finally wrap up processing by 1830-1900. This is followed by a shower, camera downloading, data entry and lastly sleep! However our second day wasn’t nearly so typical! Molly Installing ARMS in 2010. The same ARMS unit in 2012.
