The great Ed Coan performed a workout structured over 14 weeks of decreasing reps and increasing weight, ending with as low as a single rep in his final week. Bobybuilders are not after maximum strength; instead their objective is maximum muscle growth. This requires a higher number of reps and sets, normally 8 to 15, to increase the breakdown on muscle tissue and promote more growth during recovery.
