equine expressions: changing of the guards
http://equineexpressions.blogspot.com/2015/07/changing-of-guards.html
Changing of the guards. You know those days when you arrive at the barn and everything is off kilter? You can see it the minute you pull in the driveway, and you can certainly feel it when you walk in the barn. Groom, wash rear/legs, walk.and then it happened. I've known all along this whole stall rest thing would be our demise, just based on Koda's personality and our history, but never once in a million years did I think it would be in hand. Saying behind us.whatever it was, sent Koda into panic. I cou...
equine expressions: June 2014
http://equineexpressions.blogspot.com/2014_06_01_archive.html
It's not all about the ride. Earlier this month we made the trek up north for a trail riding trip with Nemo and Koda in tow. The change of pace, different surroundings, friendly faces, and spending time away with our horses are memories we always look forward to making, and hold near and dear to our hearts. As many times as we've ridden the same Nicolet National Forest. Apparently after such a looong cold hard winter,. The sudden hot weather. The bugs weren't too bad at our cabin site. We decided to ...
equine expressions: July 2015
http://equineexpressions.blogspot.com/2015_07_01_archive.html
After close to three weeks, I went to the barn for the first time to see Koda. The steamy, leftover wet weather kept us inside for the most part. It was uneventful, and quiet. I just observed, no handling. Wasn't sure what to expect. It's been so long since I've been there, everything felt odd. Absolutely love that Brad is mixing things up and giving Koda things to think about! Can't get too active tho, Koda needs to be kept walking calm. Here is a short video of their indoor session walk yesterday.

News flash = there is a new baby at our barn! Foal belongs to our trainer, or her husband, depending on who you ask :) It's been a long time since Iron Horse has had a wee one running around, none in the past four years since we've been riding been there. Their new little guy stole everyone's heart, but not before the dam did. What a sweet sociable mare. Is, and more importantly she is a good mom. I am really happy to have a foal I can take pictures of and watch grow up. I've already. Our frainer is typi...
equine expressions: roll out the barrel
http://equineexpressions.blogspot.com/2015/04/roll-out-barrel.html
Roll out the barrel. Days have turned into weeks, and my saddle time continues at the speed of walk. I think my sore back is finally calmed down enough to begin progressive riding? I know it will be limited at best, as I still find myself bracing. My stiffness promptly results in a "what's your problem" look from my horse. We've lost so much ground. Sigh. Every time we restart, which seems to happen a lot to us, the connection comes back faster. Right? At least that's my hope. Koda was all ears and wante...

One Old Cowgirl's View. Of Life on the Alberta Prairie. His Hand →. July 4, 2015. They seemed like a good idea to me when I first heard it, thinking they would save cows ears. The ear tags get caught and pulled out pretty often which tears the ear. But note that this tag (once put into the brisket on a cow) we found by a tank still in tact, meaning it tore the flesh in the cows brisket when it pulled out. much harder to do and a much bigger injury. Maybe not such a good invention. His Hand →. Border Coll...

One Old Cowgirl's View. Of Life on the Alberta Prairie. Monthly Archives: June 2015. June 30, 2015. Mostly I just lose stuff out on the prairie: cell phones, ropes, hats, and then my cantle pack this year (with medicine in it luckily it was only oxy and only a partial bottle). But look what I miraculously found in the middle of 40,000 acres: someone’s really nice walkie-talkie. Not sure if still works or how to find the owner. June 30, 2015. June 30, 2015. But they need maintenance and here’s why. I apol...

One Old Cowgirl's View. Of Life on the Alberta Prairie. Monthly Archives: April 2015. Happier than a Bird with a French Fry. April 24, 2015. Today we spent all day in a meeting an hour and a half away and went over and signed our contract for the season. Got to meet all the members who are putting cattle out on our lease. It was interesting to see the new beginnings of a grazing association. I don’t think the members really understand how privileged they are to be awarded that grazing contract and ...

One Old Cowgirl's View. Of Life on the Alberta Prairie. Our Anniversary →. July 15, 2015. Finally finished the last of the fence checking/fixing for this year. Thought maybe we’d get rained on but it stayed south of the Milk River in Montana. Some of the country is wild and rough like I’ve said before but I like it. And I love the big sky and the clouds and always being able to see the weather coming at you, not just when we’re fencing. This entry was posted in Uncategorized. Our Anniversary →. Enter you...

One Old Cowgirl's View. Of Life on the Alberta Prairie. Monthly Archives: August 2015. 45 minutes a Day. August 28, 2015. I had a doctor tell me that getting your heart rate up for 45 minutes a day was a real immune system booster. He asked if that happened for me working out on the prairie and I had to tell the truth and say that my horse does most of the work. Unless things got exciting (never a good thing) my heart rate stayed pretty normal. August 28, 2015. 8221; I didn’t even answer him. But then, t...
