Eric Froehlich's Blog. This is a new Page. Welcome to my Blog. Living in Marina, CA. February 22, 2014. Marina is a small coastal town within the Monterey Bay. Approximately a 6 miles of the way up the mouth from the south end of the bay, Marina strangely has no marina to say, but rather has a long sand dune coastline that is a State Park. Obviously I have a bit of a city planner in me but probably one that is unrealistic with the hopes to redesign it which would require an active use of eminent domain.

Planned Friday morning walk with Tucker at Garland Ranch Regional Park. I have been to this dog friendly park twice before. To get to it from the dirt parking lot you hike across this foot bridge that crosses over Carmel Vally Creek. On the Hike you walk by a remote Fire Tower overlooking some remote wooded areas. Fort Ord is a recently closed military base that occupied a massive section of property situated within and between the towns of Marina and Seaside. Much of it has become a National Monument. Unfortunately, the Fort was also a practice range for various artillery guns. So there is some danger in walking off the dirt roads and designated trails. Fort Ord: Creekside Trail Head.

One of the more exciting aspects of coastal ridge soaring is the fact that ofter throughout your entire flight you are right above the ground. Non-pilots assume there is much more safety being so low and flying over a softer terrain compared to hard compacted dry soil of inland sites but the reality is very much the opposite. There is saftey with distance between you and the ground when hang gliding. Page 1 of 2.

Howdy, this website was created by Eric Froehlich a coastal pilot living 0.9 miles away from Marina State Beach within the Monterey Bay of the Central Coastal of California just 2hrs south of San Francisco. The initial goal of this site was to create a group blog but my fellow flying buddies whom I enlisted to share their thoughts on the topic were not terribly motivated (they preferred sharing their experiences via email and/or the Yahoo Group - Monterey Bay Hang Gliding Association.
