Grown upz is an independent, international arts and culture community started by students at USC. Since only part of each print issue is adapted online, the website is intended to complement the original magazine and showcase multimedia pieces, or projects that would be limited by the printed medium. While the print magazine contains pieces in chronological order, the filter content by medium, especially given that pieces range from poetry to playlists. Website exploring semiotics in new media.
USC AQMD – Eric Liu

Data from the 2012 USC AQMD (Air Quality Management District) survey was visualized for an Information Visualization course. The project was completed in collaboration with Mark Vrahas, Shaina Wooley and Kieran Reynolds. Automotive transportation increases drastically during peak hours in relation to volume of concurrent traffic. The distortion caused by radial charts is used to make the portion of automotive commuters appear disproportionately large. Website exploring semiotics in new media.
Fitts – Eric Liu

Presented as an interaction design tool, this project calculates the optimal width for content based on the width of its containing web browser using an algorithm modeled after Fitts’s Law. Fitts’s Law is a decades old principle used in Human-Computer Interaction to predict the optimal distance to the target based on its width. The multimedia project presents the recollections of an old ascetic and explores the New Aesthetic, a term coined by James Bridle that examines the dynamic between the virtual and physical. Originally, the old ascetic is a former history professor turned exile, living in the Alaskan wilderness for decades. The project reveals his journey through his perceived documentation of the world after abandoning his lifestyle as a recluse. Online archive of works developed for the Rilao Project.
The Uninhabited Lands – Eric Liu

The project was produced during the second semester of the Rilao Project and developed for a world building course taught by Alex McDowell RDI. The artifact is the recovered travelogue of explorer Lan Volores, recovered by his granddaughter nearly eighty years after the 1919 expedition. The printed document records his encounters with found objects and materials in the then-unexplored Northwestern quadrant of the Rilao island. Online archive of works developed for the Rilao Project.
