Emily's 704 Blog: Idea draft on philosophy on marking grammar errors
http://emily-704.blogspot.com/2014/04/idea-draft-on-philosophy-on-marking.html
Blog for Eng 704 at SFSU. Sunday, April 13, 2014. Idea draft on philosophy on marking grammar errors. First, I'd like an opportunity to ask students what kinds of marks help them. Are there particular issues that they know they would like help with, or particular goals they have in this area. This may come in the form of a short freewrite on the first day of class, a quick 1:1 conference with students while they work on something else, etc. When possible, I mark at maximum, two or three patterns of error...

Blog for Eng 704 at SFSU. Friday, April 18, 2014. I was nervous about meeting my Monday student this week because of the crisis we'd had the week prior. But, happily, things went really well. We talked and debriefed about the assignment she'd struggled over, talked about how she worked through the problems when we couldn't meet, and then we moved on to brainstorming for her next project. Generic course plan and where topics fit. Unit 1 - Narrative essay. Sentence boundaries, run-ons, fragments. Not all o...

Emily's 704 Blog: ESL and Responding to Errors reading

Blog for Eng 704 at SFSU. Sunday, April 13, 2014. ESL and Responding to Errors reading. I had to keep reminding myself that these readings are about ESL writers, and not native speakers. Some of the research and discussion offered answers and guidance for questions that I think are interesting for students of all backgrounds. I wonder how much of this guidance and discussion can transfer to native speaker students as well. Chapter 1 - Why is Error Treatment Necessary for L2 Writers? Chapter 2 - Perspecti...

Blog for Eng 704 at SFSU. Friday, April 18, 2014. Generic course plan and where topics fit. This is difficult to try and brainstorm in this form because I think it depends a lot on students needs. The diagnostic essay in the beginning of the class may show that we really need to work on sentence-level clarity, grammar, etc early on. I kind of imagined this being the case for this brainstorm. Unit 1 - Narrative essay. Tense, verbs, (command of them, understanding of how tense works, when to change, etc).

Emily's 704 Blog: Notes on our philosophies on working with international students

Blog for Eng 704 at SFSU. Monday, May 5, 2014. Notes on our philosophies on working with international students. Sorry, I didn't see that we had a blog entry until this afternoon. ack! Here are my thoughts after reading everyone's drafts of essays on working with international students (15 minutes before class. boo! How do you come down in terms of assessing international students' work? Do you treat it exactly the same as your native-speaking students, or are there ways you treat them differently? My ge...

Emily's 704 Blog: Grammar, style, rhetorical issues I think are expected

Blog for Eng 704 at SFSU. Friday, April 18, 2014. Grammar, style, rhetorical issues I think are expected. Q: What grammatical, stylistic and rhetorical issues should be taught in Freshman Composition? What should students be proficient in before they move on to other college courses? If I limit this list to only the subset of grammar, stylistic, and rhetorical issues that I think their future teachers will expect of them, my list looks something like this:. Access to standard academic written English.

Blog for Eng 704 at SFSU. Friday, February 28, 2014. Readings - Phonology, Morphology, Syntax errors. Ok, these chapters are dense. I am not sure I've got all of these straight. but I'll try. Would fall under this category as well. This is when writers use speech-acceptable grammatical constructions in writing. Like errors with sentence boundaries. (See what I did there? I already have a student who I believe might be struggling a lot with these issues, and I'm already trying to think of ways to work wit...

Blog for Eng 704 at SFSU. Friday, January 31, 2014. Response to "Importance of Dance". This assignment asks us to work with "Ability to Dance", but the closest essay is the "Importance of Dance". I'm really hoping that's the correct essay. Relatively well organized. Each paragraph serves a distinct function. Good use of transition phrases and sentences. An interesting topic, with multiple sub-points beyond simply "dancing is good for you". Good types of content and overall flow of the essay. I'd spend ma...
