Metronome has been broken for decades and I’ve gone through numerous small, digital devices over the years. Just before taking the plunge and buying myself an iDevice, I was using a Dr. Beat DB-90. As my time reference. I still use it, hooked up to an amplifier in my rehearsal studio, and it’s great for practicing drum set, timbales, or anything else that is loud. Here’s a great video of maestro José Eladio taking a fairly basic Afro-Cuban beat and stretching the phrasing while soloing around clavé. He really makes the whole passage sound like elastic, even with a strict clavé on top of it all. Thanks to Kevin Brady. For posting the video.
