Stanley | eric without borders

https://ericwithoutborders.wordpress.com/2013/06/24/stanley

Earn your stripes →. June 24, 2013. He works at the organic garden at the lodge, growing vegetables and fruits. He likes his job for the most part. He studied organic farming and is happy to be working in his field. But he wants more. He has big dreams. He wants to work for himself. He has a plan. He has the ambition. He has the know-how. He has the land. He doesn’t have the capital. I asked Stanley about if he’s looked into microfinance options. He told me that it’s not really available here in Sian...

UPDATE: Stanley | eric without borders

https://ericwithoutborders.wordpress.com/2013/08/21/update-stanley

Same same →. August 21, 2013. Just want to give a quick update on Stanley. He was able to obtain a loan. He has started his chicken business while still working full time at the organic garden. He has a solid business plan. Stanley, king of the chickens. Feeding the chickens in the temporary coop. New coop being built. I see in Little Jerry Seinfeld the unlimited future I once had. How to you transport a chicken? In a bag of course. This entry was posted in Animals. Same same →. August 21, 2013 at 5:47 pm.

Social cynicism | eric without borders

UPDATE: Stanley →. August 20, 2013. I promised a while ago that I’d talk about social enterprise. I also promised it would be cynical. I’m a man of my word. I’ve been trying to figure out what makes a social enterprise. Here in Zambia. I think I got it. A social enterprise in Zambia is a business where a westerner is involved. Take that however you wish. This entry was posted in Development. UPDATE: Stanley →. August 21, 2013 at 12:14 am. What are the benefits of being classified a social enterprise?

August 22, 2013. My time here in Zambia is coming to an end. If there’s one thing that this trip has confirmed it’s that we’re all the same. I’ve written a lot of about the differences I’ve experienced here. They are many. They are interesting. They can be surprising. They can be frustrating. But the reality is that as many differences as there are between countries and cultures, there are infinitely many similarities. We are all people. We love to smile. We love to laugh. We love to love. Post was not s...

Newer posts →. August 13, 2013. EWB loves using buzzwords. Systemic change is one of them. It’s a good thing. Recently I got to see a well known international NGO (I’m not going to name names) set up a borehole pump for the local community. The borehole already existed but had been unused for years due to a broken pump. Sounds good. The community needed a borehole to get water. Water is life. But it’s not an example of systemic change. Instead, the NGO comes in, installs the pump and leaves. Today one of...

Anything can happen when Timothy goes to Malawi. July 15, 2013. Please refer to my first work related blog post entitled WatSan! For more context and background to the work I’m doing*. I like to think of the system I’m working in as a series of cause and effects. At one end you have people with things like diarrhea or cholera, or maybe malnourished children, and you ask the question why? However, in my case, the leverage point that WatSan has found is improving health services delivered by permanent.
