Other large dams were used to backup rivers and create large reservoirs. Common to the the higher canal elevations, these dams provided a large backup water supply. Holding back the lavish amount of water available in the spring, they doled it out to the canal over the season, insuring that there was always an adequate amount in the canals. They played and increasingly important role as the canals got bigger and bigger.
