The schools in the Clermont area. There have been five schools located in the Clermont area over the years. They were. Students from Clermont attended three different high schools and they were Mt Jewett High School,. Was located north of the settlement called the Patch. The Patch consisted of about 40 company houses built by the Buffalo Coal Company for their employees. The Patch also housed many of the miners who worked at Gumboot Mines and for the Pennsy Railroad. The Great Depression was the worst economic slump ever in. History, and one, which spread to virtually the entire industrialized world. The depression began in late 1929 and lasted for nearly ten years. Cooking and canning was done on old gas stoves like this one:. A great many of the houses did not have any running water and depended on outside wells or pumps like these:. Indoor plumbing was not found in many houses so outhouses similar to this one were used. Doctors in Clermont

By all evidence available there were only four doctors that served the Clermont people by making house calls to Clermont. They were Dr. Chadwick from Smethport , Dr. Howard Cleveland from Mt Jewett, Dr. Freeman from Hazelhurst, and Dr. Joseph Alfieri. Dr Chadwick would ride the train to Clermont when making house calls and of course after the trains ceased running many Clermont people drove to Smethport in their cars to see the doctor in his office. Early Settlements in Clermont Area. There were two communal communities in the present Clermont area before 1900. Neither was located in Clermont but rather on the outskirts.
