But with dragons - Odds Bodds. Dec 8th, 2011 03:48 pm .But with dragons. Originally posted at erinbow.com. Gonna try to do a better job with my mirroring.). Check out this Adam Gopnik piece. From the New Yorker on why young people like fantasy novels. For a change, it’s NOT insulting to youth or to fantasy. (Much.). I once told a class of 12th Graders that Plain Kate. Sep 4th, 2011 12:27 am. Originally posted at erinbow.com). Readers, I have been shopping. Under the influence of my visiting (and very stylish) mother, I bought not one but two Serious Frocks. The Serious Frocks are needed for some serious parties. In fact, by the end of the month I am anticipating needing writerly life support, as I sink into some kind of introvert’s healing coma. Because here’s my schedule:. Science in the Pub. Word on the Street. Sunday, September 25: I’ll be appearing via video...

An open letter to Mr. Joel "Adults Should Read Adult Books" Stein - Odds Bodds. Mar 30th, 2012 10:45 am An open letter to Mr. Joel "Adults Should Read Adult Books" Stein. In response to this piece. In the New York Times. A particularly fun addition to a growing list of major newspaper pieces by people who dont read young adult fiction but publicly disparage it anyway. Dear Mr. Stein,. Youre a humorist, yes? Your books (and possibly this column) are meant to be funny? Thats just ducky: good for you! For m...

Mar 29th, 2012 02:52 pm When not writing is the best writing you can do. Yesterday I did a great deal of awesome writing, bringing my characters to a climax/crisis/realization/high-point thingy. (This is the technical term.) Today I put almost no words on paper. Not gonna happen) I feel better for letting the dough sit. See also: [how to get stuck and brood]. May 9th, 2011 12:32 pm Things I learned about my writing while learning to baking bread. Go read the whole thing. Enjoy the process. There's pl...

On Endings .... - Odds Bodds

https://erinbow.livejournal.com/173407.html

On Endings . - Odds Bodds. Apr 3rd, 2012 10:44 pm On Endings . I was just talking to a writer friend about how we want our scenes, our chapters, our stories as a whole, to be a little more jagged and gangly, with bits sticking out that dont quite fit. Neatness is often seductive - you feel its right if it all fits together - but it is a small thing, and a false one. Because it was time for her to go pick up her daughter from school. Why are my chapters suddenly turning out at about 3,000 words? But writi...

Fish in Motion: June 2012

http://fishinmotion.blogspot.com/2012_06_01_archive.html

Wednesday, June 27, 2012. My eldest was born on June 26 and from an early age loved to pick the strawberries that ripened at the time of his birthday. For his very first birthday, we actually invited friends and had a strawberry-themed soiree. Picking strawberries has always had a child theme in my lfie: I recall being a child and being left with my sister in a patch to pick while my mom picked up our other sister. I remember that it was hot work. Sunday, June 24, 2012. All Greek to me. As a writer, I in...

Fish in Motion: July 2012

http://fishinmotion.blogspot.com/2012_07_01_archive.html

Friday, July 6, 2012. I know, I know. I've neglected you like I usually forget my Twitter account. The thing is that it's summertime and the kids are home, but the work hasn't stopped. If anything, it has actually increased. Don't get me wrong: I love it, the whole thing. The work, the family, the fun. Oh, and the novel that is springing forth from my head these days. It just adds up to a lot. Which leaves me little space for you, blog-o-mine. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). The Back Yard Olympics.

Fish in Motion: Remembering

http://fishinmotion.blogspot.com/2012/11/remembering.html

Friday, November 9, 2012. I just finished a really long post explaining my internal conflicts around Remembrance Day. Basically I'm a pacifist who is moved to tears by the sacrifices made for our country by soldiers. I'm someone who thinks fighting is almost never the solution, but that occasionally it is - and the enormous challenge is to figure out, in the moment, which kind of situation we face. Thank you to those who stood up and fought for us. Thank you to those who would not fight but still sto...

Fish in Motion: May 2012

http://fishinmotion.blogspot.com/2012_05_01_archive.html

Sunday, May 27, 2012. A Single Red Poppy in the Garden. There's a single red poppy in my garden. Yesterday it was a ball of green and this morning, the colour shone forth - red as shameless lipstick. It has not yet opened, but by tomorrow night, the petals will likely be strewn about on the ground, spent. But tonight, it's there, brilliant and singular and vivid. Which is good because this week has not exactly been that sort of week. It hasn't been a bad week in any way, but it hasn't been brilliant.

Fish in Motion: February 2012

http://fishinmotion.blogspot.com/2012_02_01_archive.html

Tuesday, February 28, 2012. I must first of all confess that I read. Gone with the Wind. In one epic night and spent one of the happiest days of my life reading the final. Book from cover to cover. So I've been known to binge before on books. Sunday morning, though, I was feeling it. I had been out the night before to a book launch for local author Carrie Snyder's book The Juliet Stories. What if I just don't like it? What if it's riddled with typos (book, not baby)? So the fear of quality wasn't there&#...

Fish in Motion: January 2012

http://fishinmotion.blogspot.com/2012_01_01_archive.html

Friday, January 27, 2012. The Grey: Roots and Tips. Little tip for you if you're thinking of going grey: Be as tall as you can be. This helps in two respects. One, your increasingly pale hairline is visible only to people taller than you. Also, your height makes you slightly intimidating and no one will whisper to you that your roots are showing. Another tip: Embrace the grey! Thursday, January 26, 2012. And so, suddenly, a poem:. You are the wuffest. It's either that or he bites her ears off. You became...

Fish in Motion: Market season

http://fishinmotion.blogspot.com/2012/10/market-season.html

Saturday, October 27, 2012. You live close to the land when you farm,. When you sell produce,. You never know what a season will bring. And so you plant your seeds, your slips in faith. Trusting the one who decides what will live and what will not. What will thrive and what will wither. You plant and you wait and you watch the skies for rainclouds and sunshine. Check forecasts for frosts. You don’t always see the storms coming. And yet you prepare what you can. Angels and axles, screams and silence.

Fish in Motion: An Embarrassment of Riches

http://fishinmotion.blogspot.com/2012/10/an-embarassment-of-riches.html

Monday, October 8, 2012. An Embarrassment of Riches. I start with my beautiful family, with the fact that I enjoy the freedoms and relative wealth of living in Canada, that I still have my parents and the rest of our family, for health, for work I love, for longstanding friendships that sustain me, for beauty, for our neighbourhood, for this dog who gets me out every day and who has meant I've met such lovely people. For pain that makes me take better care of myself. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

Fish in Motion: Soggy Snoopy

http://fishinmotion.blogspot.com/2012/10/soggy-snoopy.html

Tuesday, October 23, 2012. So i finally persuaded the dog to go out into the dark, sodden morning to walk around the block, but when we were halfway around, the rain picked up and we began to be pelted with leaves and cold water, and he balked. i knew what he meant and that there was no use trying to persuade him so we turned around to walk back. Because i have no toddler, no small child. I'm not sure i want to know. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). The Back Yard Olympics. Classic" Hot Dog Flavour.

The City Under Shadow. The City Under Shadow. March 21, 2017. Welby was a rat. A small scavenger of a man who gobbled up information like a rat does cheese. He was never big enough to protect himself growing up so he learned to do so by knowing more then anyone else. He used this to broker himself some semblance of protection but always kept his head down from anyone with real power. 8220;Why so glum good man? OUR GROWING FAMILY

Monday, February 3, 2014. My oh my.Time flies.Hello 2014. Let me start off by saying. Holy cow has it really been 2 1/2 years since I have updated! I'm horrible, I know, but let me assure you those years have flown by with lots of fun and not so much fun times! But that is life and we play with the cards we are dealt. And I for one like to think that I have been dealt a pretty good hand! You have come in with a bang hands down! We are almost a month out from surgery and he is doing great! I can't believe...

May 3rd, 2012 02:58 pm. Here’s an excerpt from an interview with me that’s up today over at Scribophile. An online critiquing and hanging-with-writers community. Scribophile: In general, how much research do you do for your novels? Does it take place before you sit down and write the thing, or do you work on both tasks at the same time? And how can you tell when you’ve done enough—or even too much? I call this letting-research-shape-the-story thing “writing from the inside out.”. Apr 28th, 2012 09:52 am.

April 30, 2010. I have a house! The last 10 months seem like they could have been a dream. Or nightmare, depending on which day. One that I don't know if I want to re-live here, although my intention was to use my blog to document the whole house-building process. Are you a minimalist? Does your "stuff" have meaning or is it just there? What things do you treasure the most? Labels: spring photos ephemerals flowers ferns tulips orchids moving new house material things.
