On the surface, a complex layering of pattern and color evolves as the clay is worked at each stage. Precise patterns carved deeply into clay s surface merge with the form, inviting the decoration to become structure. Areas are then covered with carefully chosen glazes that may run, both enhancing and obscuring the carving. One might recognize floral motifs, snowflakes, microbes or calligraphy within the ambiguous multilayered surfaces.

A student's journey in clay. Wednesday, March 17, 2010. Just finished with all my "wet work" today and thanks to my blowdryer and boxfan, they are all sitting on the bisque shelf ready to be fired off tomorrow. The last few days have been a bit stressful trying to get all my decorating done. I wasn't behind until Monday when I left the studio with my bag of ceramics tool on the roof of my car. A student's journey in clay. Wednesday, October 29, 2008. What a beautiful morning! The sun is shining, it's a little chilly outside (for Florida) but I have my cup of tea so all is well with the world. My baby brother is flying in from Illinois today to stay with us for 5 days and I'm really looking forward to seeing him again! As far as studio news, I've been working really hard the last couple days to get my etsy site up and running but it officially went live Monday night. Yay! Posted by April Rexroad.

A lot has happened in the past three months and while I tried to document it, I didn't have enough time for sleep much less for updating my blog. This first picture is my new studio from about a week ago, round two of making a very large special order for one of my customers. Tuesday, April 27, 2010. I've been trying out silica sand. I love the sugar quality. This is just the beginning. I think I'm going to slow down on the massive sculptural peices and work primarly on function. I felt like I needed to get this urge to "remove function" out for a bit and now I'm ready to get back to making pots! Sand is just another texture. Something to grasp on to. Literally. :). A student's journey in clay. Thursday, March 25, 2010. Yesterday I went for a glorious long hike through a state park near my house. It was perfect! I think I'm taking next week off from potting partly because my tools haven't arrived yet (remember? I lost my whole tool box) and partly because I want to renew my creative juices.
