Sunday, June 14, 2015. Black Spectatorship and the Politics of Skin Color. And from my time spent with West I was left wondering, "What is beauty? These are questions I've carried into new writings and my dissertation area. The boundary that West perceived as limiting was no fantasy either. In Portraits of the New Negro Woman,. Ultimately, the idealization of black women as mulattas, madonnas, teachers, or socialites in Harlem Renaissance literature, visual art, periodicals and aesthetic discourse establ...

Tuesday, August 7, 2012. TWU 2012 Faulkner Seminar - Discovering a Sense of Place. One place understood helps us understand all places better.”. As we rounded the corner onto the Ole Miss University campus, I had no idea what to expect from this trip to attend The 39th Annual Faulkner and Yoknapatawpha Conference. It is only upon reflection that I realize the greatest experience the trip afforded was in allowing me the discovery of a sense of place. Faulkner writes, “To understand the world, you. Angela ...

Sunday, February 24, 2013. Somehow December has morphed into late February and so it's not surprising that yesterday's walk yielded sightings of buds ready to burst and bushes already flowering with delicate doily-like blooms. The semester is progressing rapidly too. We are almost mid-semester, closing week six in Texas Literature, with analysis of the slice-of-life plays of Herman Foote, which followed William Humphrey's sumptuous narrative in Home from the Hill,. And Kathryn Porter's Old Order,. And, a...

Sunday, June 24, 2012. The heat is on. 8220;It is what you read when you don't have to that determines what you will be when you can't help it.” Oscar Wilde. Just back in from a morning walk and Texas steam heat is in full effect, but as you can see from the photo the skies have been magical! And Howell's The Rise of Silas Lapham. I wrote a paper last semester about how this poem ties into my life. It's emotional to read but I think the imagery in this poem is top notch and evokes a lot of thoughts and emotion.
