Saturday, January 2, 2010. Janet Evanovich's "To The Nines" Stigmatizes. This is cross-posted on my other site: Hope is Real! On the way back from Maryland, which is a twelve hour drive, my family listened to a Janet Evanovich book on CD titled, "To The Nines." This is the second time that I have listened to one of her books and they are good in that they make you laugh while driving, which helps one not to fall asleep. I loved listening to my dad laugh! Another thing that just kills me about saying some...

Sunday, January 10, 2010. Womyn of the Week - Mette Ivie Harrison. I like this book, because the female character is incredibly strong. She is not afraid to get dirty, loves physical activity, and how she loves to hunt is described in detail. She is the most logical character in the book. It is absolutely thrilling to read a book aloud to a teenage girl where the role model is an actual role model and not a "moony"-eyed, overly romantic fool. Labels: Mette Ivie Harrison. The Princess and the Bear. Even t...

Tuesday, January 19, 2010. Sweet honey in the rock - Ellas Song. I am sorry that I did not post on Martin Luther King Day. I worked that day and was really tired when I came home. Ella's song is named after Ella Baker, and we sing this song at my church every Martin Luther King Sunday. It uplifts my soul and spirit. Later this week, I will do a post on Ella Baker, as our "womyn of the week." Enjoy! Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Buy Bright Hope Bags! Http:/ BrightHope.etsy.com. Wednesday, January 20, 2010. Womyn of the Week - Ella Baker. Yesterday, I posted a video of the group, "Sweet Honey in the Rock" singing the song, "Ella's Song," which was named after Ella Baker. The main words in the song are, "We who believe in freedom cannot rest until it comes" - one of her famous sayings. Painting by Robert Shetterly. For the " Americans Who Tell the Truth" project). The painting has this quote:. In 1927, Baker graduated from Shaw University in Raleigh, North Carolina. She then ...

Wednesday, January 6, 2010. Feminism Does Not Equal Revenge. Jemima looks blank. "So anyway," she says at last, turning back to me. "I'd be delighted to help. Revenge is actually quite a specialty of mine, though I say it myself.". I avoid Lissy's eyes. "What did you have in mind? Scrape his car, shred his suits, sew fish inside his curtains and wait for them to rot." she reels off instantly, as though reciting poetry. Did you learn that at finishing school? Says Lissy, rolling her eyes. Friends of The E...

Friday, June 26, 2009. You Didn't Have to Change, Michael. This video is from "Free to Be, You and Me" and features a young Michael Jackson and Roberta Flack. The movie, music, and book influenced my life in ways that I cannot even begin to appreciate. Oh, Michael, when Flack sings, "You don't have to change at all," I think she meant it. I am going away this weekend, so sorry that I never got to this week's "womyn of the week", but I'll tell you who next week's is - Dorothea Dix! Free to Be You and Me.
