Ernest Clayton (b. 1868) studied at the South Kensington Art Schools (now the Royal Academy of Art) and the London Museum. After a failed effort to raise peaches in Bakersfield, he moved in 1897 to San Francisco and resumed his art work, producing stained glass windows and other forms of art glass. Ernest Clayton was our grandfather. Seventy years ago around San Anselmo there were still large sweeps of wildflowers to be seen where now there are roads, houses, and gardens of exotic plants.

This is one of the finest examples of a coastal redwood forest I have even seen. Kudos to Sonoma County Regional Parks, which maintains this park consisting of a campground, small beach, historical one room schoolhouse, and a fern-filled redwood canyon complete with a meandering creek and so much startling green to cause even your doggies eyes to pop.

Spring fizzled but in the midst of it all I could do was visit old haunts and try to find some new ones. Not as many “new to me” flowers found, but that number should be smaller every year. Most of the Clayton wildflower studies were purchased by the San Francisco Library prior to his death. Ernest Clayton was our grandfather. In order to make his beautiful art more available to the public, we started Ernest Clayton Wildflower Images (ECWI). We offer high-quality giclée prints. As well as note cards and calendars.
