Fiona's ESL Blog: Being Yourself
http://eslenglish-fiona.blogspot.com/2008/10/being-yourself.html
It’s usually a quick one hour lecture out of the hundreds budding teachers endure. Um, I mean. Falls under a far more arbitrary umbrella. That said, there is a grand grey area where professional boundaries are concerned. Student-teacher relations, for example, and particularly those in an adult learning environment, may be bound by a strict zero-contact policy. Yet, just as likely, some institutions may. What about what teachers. Say about their beliefs in the classroom. Ironically, teachers are often co...
Fiona's ESL Blog: August 2008
http://eslenglish-fiona.blogspot.com/2008_08_01_archive.html
When Bill emailed and asked if I knew of anyone who could offer a materials development internship for one of his MATESOL candidates, I racked my brain and came up with one or two lame possibilities. Bill politely mused on my suggestions and showed his characteristic patience and humour while I stumbled into the most obvious solution and the real reason Bill had asked me at all. Me. Over the four or so months we worked together, using email, Skype, IM, and (egads! Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Email and la...
Fiona's ESL Blog: FUNCTIONALL LESSONS
http://eslenglish-fiona.blogspot.com/p/functionall-lessons.html
Functionall" is the name of my publishing house! Functionall" was meant to be a clever(? Play on "Functions" (language functions) and functional English. My first self-published textbook was "Functionall: an intermediate speaking course for English language learners". It seems out-dated to me now and I've been slowly trying to update the content without reinventing the wheel. Keep checking back as I add updated content and some oldies but goodies as well! Regret and Lack of Regret. To Regret or Not Regret.
Fiona's ESL Blog: Cheating: not just for students!
http://eslenglish-fiona.blogspot.com/2011/09/cheating-not-just-for-students_13.html
Cheating: not just for students! A few weeks ago in the Canadian media, there was much ado about the so-called disproportionate number of international students in Canadian universities caught cheating and plagiarising. The headlines were typically sensational and smacking of the Us vs. Them isolationist rhetoric that is being spewed in certain quarters in the U.S. and Canada. Worst, the colleague is also a friend. I know, I know, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.blah blah blah. It...Someone h...
Fiona's ESL Blog: So what's wrong with "milking it"??
http://eslenglish-fiona.blogspot.com/2007/10/so-whats-wrong-with-milking-it.html
So what's wrong with "milking it"? Milk it for all it's worth! A great refrain and one a teacher should never feel guilty for uddering. Uh, I mean. Ok corny joke aside, it is true there are usually two types of teachers that love to stretch a lesson or theme or activity as far as it will go: a new teacher who is accidentally inadequately prepared, and an experienced teacher who is intentionally inadequately prepared or, in other words, perfectly prepared. Journey with many dimensions. All About My Body.

Fiona's ESL Blog: Description vs. Prescription: Finding the Balance
http://eslenglish-fiona.blogspot.com/2007/05/description-vs-prescription-finding.html
Description vs. Prescription: Finding the Balance. As I learn this new art of self-promotion, I find myself doing things out of my comfort zone. Waaaaaaay. Out of my comfort zone. My web designer. Suggested I join some ESL/EFL online forums, so I reluctantly signed up to a few, certain all manner of wackos would suddenly show up on my doorstep or worse, nothing would happen; it would all be just a colossal. Waste of my time. Click on links or images to view, download, or print free lessons. Provoking Tho...

Lesson Download: Terry Fox, Canadian Hero. The road at the bottom of our street has had the signs posted for days: SPECIAL EVENT. For years. For Terry. (For Cancer). In China. To you, Terry. Thank you. An oldie-but-goodie blog post about Terry can be found here: Fiona's Other Blog. Out of Office Reply. The s...
