If all goes according to plan, this will be the only place I talk extensively about craft in this blog. By. I mean the process of writing my goal with Magpie and Whale is to write, not write about writing. There are many excellent blogs and resources out there on that front (check my sidebar for a few); all I want to address here is how I do it, and what experiences have been most helpful for my development as a storyteller. It’s Easier to Take Away and Other True Lies. Chicago is the best city in the wo...

From “The Astronaut’s Dilemma” to “The Taming of the Fondue”. Last night I saw my last Improvised Shakespeare show in Chicago for what is likely to be quite a while. They’re probably one of my top three favorite things about this city, and while I am super sad to lose out on regular access to their shows (especially in their gorgeous new theater at iO’s new, incredible space on Kingsbury Street! They visit New York often enough that I shouldn’t be bereft for too long. Follow any comments here with the RS...

Tonight I get to see Aziz Ansari at the Chicago Theater, a comedian I have never seen live in an iconic venue. I’ve never manage to hit up. In celebration of that, and of the brilliant, funny and wonderful Analicia. My hairstylist who knows how to make curly hair all that it can be (pictured above with her stunning yellow locks), I’m offloading some of the links I’ve been hoarding and meaning to share for *mumblemumble.*. This coming Memorial Day weekend will be the first since. The second cluster is abo...

The Panopticon of Celebrity: Thoughts on Chicago Wizard World ’14. Last weekend I paid a lot of money to sightsee another human being up close. I had a great time, but I’ve been thinking about the fundamental weirdness of it ever since. I’d never been to a big, multi-fandom convention before Wizard World Chicago. Guardians of the Galaxy. Comic and a huge lithograph of your nerd icon of choice. That’s when I knew everything about the weekend was going to be hilarious. I wore this nonsense all weekend.

So, I’m turning 30 tomorrow. Never done that before. Thirty is a big one. Katabasis by way of the cinema. Several weeks ago, a friend at work talked me into a truly bonkers journalism experience that I’m finally undertaking this week: Twenty-four straight hours. Of Marvel Cinematic Universe films, all 11 screened in order in a theater, culminating in. Avengers: Age of Ultron. That’s Wednesday and Thursday, basically, and I’ll probably be pretty loopy through the weekend, if I’m honest. Bookmark/tab keeper. We all need some good reading to get us through things.
