Since the 1930s, 98% of the UK's flower-rich meadows have been destroyed. Half the ancient woodlands have been lost. Each county is losing on average one species every two years. Ten common flowers of Crete. This stunningly beautiful autumn saffron crocus is the symbol of Flowers of Crete. It is characterised by its large, purple-veined flowers, in colours ranging from almost pure white to deep mauve. Can be found throughout November in mountainous areas. Known only from Crete and south-west Turkey, this species forms the only natural palm forest at Vai on the east coast of the island. Is recorded as ‘at risk’ in the Greek Red Data Book. More here. Flowers of Crete Nature Reserve - Pezoulia. Soil test – Scale 8 – acid. 15 degrees east of north. Some time ago, Jane and David Sharp, owners of the Revolution Bar in the mountain village of Vrahassi, near Neapoli, East Crete, approached me with a view to making a plot of land into a nature reserve. During the summer, events are being planned to raise funds to improve and clear the donkey track and to provide a rudimentary fence to keep out the sheep and goats during the spring and early summer months.
