The Sugar Scientist: October 2011

http://ethidiumbromide.blogspot.com/2011_10_01_archive.html

Monday, October 17, 2011. Roasted Beets with Sautéed Beet Greens. I avoided beets for a very long time, because I dislike both pickled beets and borscht.  Much like brussels sprouts, beets once again prove my theory that there is a delicious way to consume any vegetable – you just have to know how to prepare it to your liking.  My favorite use for beets? 160; Roast the beets until the sugars start to caramelize, and serve over sautéed garlicky beet greens.  Delicious! One bunch beets, well cleaned. Remov...

Wednesday, September 05, 2012. 30 By 30: Monument Walk. After 11 years in D.C., it was really, truly hard to say goodbye.  I know I will still continue to see my amazing friends, and I hope they will all come to visit here for weekends (one already has! Midnight monument walks are certainly up there on the list of things I will miss the most about D.C. . So Says Julie @ Bunsen Burner Bakery. Labels: 30 by 30. September 9, 2012 at 10:19 PM. The Sugar Scientist: 30 by 30: Buy a House

http://ethidiumbromide.blogspot.com/2012/09/30-by-30-buy-house.html

Wednesday, September 05, 2012. 30 by 30: Buy a House. Number One on my 30 by 30 list. Was to buy a house, and I am delighted to report that it was also the first thing I could successfully check off the list. We moved through the process. We would actually close on the day we were supposed to close, that we were naïve for setting up our furniture delivery and movers in the days immediately following closing (since there was no way we were going to close on time).  Wrong, wrong, and wrong. 160; Easing bac...

The Sugar Scientist: June 2012

http://ethidiumbromide.blogspot.com/2012_06_01_archive.html

Thursday, June 28, 2012. On Tuesday, I turned 29 years old. Although lots of people joke about turning 29 “for the first time”, I’ve never been afraid of aging. While things are starting to look up. Maybe it’s finally starting to happen. So, without further ado, by the time I turn 30, I pledge to:. Go on one last drunken midnight monument walk with college friends before moving. Throw a bitchin’ housewarming party in our new house. Host a holiday dinner party at our new abode (Passover, perhaps? Spend 30...

Soapbox Stutter: April 2007

http://soapboxstutter.blogspot.com/2007_04_01_archive.html

The life of a PhD outside academia. Wednesday, April 25, 2007. What is wrong with people these days? Don't worry I'll get back to posting about science related things but I'm procrastinating from finishing the last few revisions on a paper so blogging about science would be a bad use of my procrastination time. Oh no As I'm standing there dumbfounded at the inconsiderate people on my bus I realize the elderly woman has a cane. A CANE! And still no one will give up their seat! Links to this post. Oh, it's...

Soapbox Stutter: Alternative Careers in Science

http://soapboxstutter.blogspot.com/2006/08/alternative-careers-in-science.html

The life of a PhD outside academia. Saturday, August 12, 2006. Alternative Careers in Science. In a weird twist of fate, the other day while looking for some book or journal article for my thesis on the university's library website I came across a book called Alternative Careers in Science. It must be because I was a woman and not really serious about science". Yep, that about sums up my experience so far when telling people my choice of finding something outside academia. I'm right there with you. All t...

Lab Protocols & Recipes. An academic medicine weblog. Md / phd student stuff. Finding a good mentor: asking the right questions. As I (and many many others as well) have previously written, finding a supportive mentor is all about asking the right questions of both the prospective mentor as well as the mentor’s trainees. As you are going through the process, think about these qualities that you may find desirable in a mentor:. Does the mentor have an open door and an approachable attitude? Careers and wh...

You ain’t got nothing on me. May 24, 2009. Reading ‘ A Whole Lotta Nothing. 8216; awhile ago, and this post. Made me wonder about things in the past that I would like to remember. I think it was nice back then, when we weren’t so dependent on technology. Things were slower, and we always felt that we were smarter than the machines. Circa 1996. There was a time when internet required dial-up and you’d sit at the computer reading a magazine while a loud ringtone connects you to the Internet. 8217; There we...

Freedom for a week | A Common Girl

https://commongirl.wordpress.com/2009/03/16/freedom-for-a-week

You ain’t got nothing on me. March 16, 2009. Freedom for a week. Today marks the start of my one-week break from work. And it’s beginning to look awesome already. For starters, I’m enjoying the sleepy dull-looking morning and still in my silly Pikachu jammies at 9.45am. I just ate the tiniest donut ever for breakfast and even though I’m quite the prude when it comes to breakfast (c’mon, start the day right! Eat your organic whachamacallits! I love love LOVE! A quiet house in the morning. Laquo; Busy bee.

You ain’t got nothing on me. March 20, 2009. Today is the last day of my wonderful one-week break. Didn’t do much studying, as you can see. But I enjoyed myself thoroughly. Although am annoyed right now with the trumpets blowing from the school next door (Damn you Alma Mater! Haven’t you plagued me enough! All this, and being bitten by a big black Horn Beetle last night. Yeah we got a lot of laughs. I don’t think I ever want to go back to work. Posted in a common girl. Leave a Reply Cancel reply. Elton John | A Common Girl

https://commongirl.wordpress.com/2009/06/20/elton-john

You ain’t got nothing on me. June 20, 2009. So I turn on the telly, and it’s Elton John’s Birthday concert! I have an obsession with Elton John/Bernie Taupin (the songs, mind you) years ago. The lyrics, the melodies. Songs in those days were all about the story-telling. While Bruce Springsteen and Bob Dylan sings of the blues and the American Life, Elton sings, well, also about that but in his own almost-hopeful way. Some of the songs are pretty trippy too! Rolling through the hay like a puppy child.

Success | A Common Girl

https://commongirl.wordpress.com/2009/03/19/success

You ain’t got nothing on me. March 19, 2009. Read online that someone would frame this poem up and place in their kitchens, and it was passed down many generations, because its simple truths kept their families together:. You can use most any measure. When you’re speaking of success. You can measure it in fancy home,. Expensive car or dress. But the measure of your real success. Is the one you cannot spend. It’s the way your kids describe you. When they’re talking to a friend’. Laquo; Freedom for a week.

The Sugar Scientist

Friday, March 15, 2013. Three months ago today, Husband and I woke up early on a Saturday morning, trekked an hour and a half into the suburbs, and came home with our new best friend, a 4.5 year old rottweiler/border collie mix. We’re finally getting her digestive issues sorted out and are heading in the right direction. It’s a good thing you’re so cute. So Says Julie @ Bunsen Burner Bakery. Links to this post.
