Just another WordPress.com site. Despite arthritis, artwork and so much socializing after my PhD results, I have been walking around and taking photos. This post is filled with some of the flowers I’ve seen over just the last few days. The wattle is out, golden and fluffy and beautiful:. And Autumn is making an appearance, mostly in the quality of the late afternoon light which touched on dwarf Bougainvillea, Lantana and the gold of not-quite sun flowers. The frangipani are still flowering:. Absolutely b...

In Search of Enlightenment: “End of Teaching Term”

In Search of Enlightenment. A political philosopher's reflections on politics, philosophy, science, medicine and law. "Enlightenment is man's emergence from his self-incurred immaturity" (Immanuel Kant, 1784). Monday, March 30, 2015. End of Teaching Term. 7 months ago 250 undergraduate students and I started an intellectual journey through the history of ideas, from Plato to Marx, in my Introduction to Political Theory. What is human nature? What constitutes the good life? What is freedom and equality?

Politics, Science, and Other Assorted Musings. Thursday, November 17, 2011. Swapping Germs to Beat C. diff? Has a great new post up on Scientific American, "Swapping Germs,". About Clostridium difficile, or C. diff colitis. She talks about fecal transplants, effective but rarely used therapy, given the "ick" factor. Often having a different perspective, I have added my own, slightly different take on fecal transplants. Posted by Dr. Judy Stone. Thursday, November 17, 2011. Links to this post. Now that ma...

A random sample of my life and thoughts. Holidays - Avoriaz 2008. Much ado about nothing. View my complete profile. Thursday, October 15, 2009. Sunday, October 11, 2009. Out and about in Mpumalanga. A most disappointing day! We were to start in Graskop but, again, the mist was too thick so we drive through to Sabie where it was marginally better. We holed up in a restaurant while we waited for the mist to lift and the rain to stop but eventually I just thought, "Oh what the hell" lets just do it. This wa...

Not being an economist I could be completely off the mark . but I don't think so. There are two issues which I think are going to break this cycle, the first is consumption and the second is our "potential skills ability" for lack of a better phrase. So what to do? My words of advice to anyone out there contemplating...

Rolands Life ...: May 2014

A random sample of my life and thoughts. Holidays - Avoriaz 2008. Much ado about nothing. View my complete profile. Saturday, May 03, 2014. It is such an unfortunate fact that holidays have to end with a day of travel and that this detracts ever so slightly from the enjoyment of the holiday. There weren't any photo opportunities today so no pretty scenes of the Aegean today. The order of today was strictly utilitarian :. 09:30 Taxi to Parikia. 10:45 Ferry to Athens. 14:45 Taxi to airport. And so it ends.
