The Tintin Trivia Quiz
Land of Black Gold. A German translation of Le Lotus Bleu. You might think “trivia” implies facts that come to mind instantly, but we intended many of the quiz questions to require research with the various Tintin books. We hope the quizzes inspire you to read and reread The Adventures of Tintinand to appreciate what you can learn about any subject by careful reading and diligent research. (But keep in mind that The Adventures of Tintin is fiction! A note on page numbering: We use the American 3-in-1 ed...

ONH Rough-skinned newt Taricha granulosa
http://onh.eugraph.com/herps/rsnewt/index.html
Rough-skinned newt Taricha granulosa. Rough-skinned newts wander across our roads on wet days in the spring and occur in and around our pond throughout the summer. On one occasion, I found one walking the same route when it was covered in snow. One of the few poisonous animals in Washington State, they contain tetrodotoxin, the same toxin found in fugu, a fish which, when prepared correctly, is a delicacy in Japan. (See Tetrodotoxin by Jim Johnson. An article in the journal Nature.
Spreading Stonecrop Sedum divergens

Spreading Stonecrop Sedum divergens. Spreading Stonecrop, Sedum divergens. Forms perennial rhizomes that lie just under the surface (6). Short stalks of succulent, red leaves (5) and bright yellow flowers spring up from the rhizomes. These photos were taken above 6,000 feet near the end of the Obstruction Point road in Olympic National Park. The plant also grows on headlands and lava fields from sea level up. Unless otherwise noted, contents 2016 Stephen Hart.
Entire-leaved Gumweed Grindelia integrifolia
http://onh.eugraph.com/plants/gumweed/index.html
Entire-leaved Gumweed Grindelia integrifolia. Entire-leaved Gumweed ( Grindelia integrifolia. Entire-leaved Gumweed gets its name from the usually smooth-edged (“entire”) leaves though some individual plants have toothed leaves. The scientific name honors Russian botanist David Grindel (1776-1836). The flowers attract many insects, as shown in the Insect section of this site. We transplanted Entire-leaved Gumweed to our yard, at 2,000 feet elevation, where it survived and bloomed, but only overwintered o...
Lipstick Cladonia Cladonia macilenta
http://onh.eugraph.com/lichens/cladoniam/index.html
Lipstick Cladonia Cladonia macilenta. On one of our first walks of 2008, we found these Lipstick Cladonia with fruiting bodies on a stump alongside the Olympic Discovery Trail in Sequim, WA. The stump sat on a north-facing slope. (6) Though there are many stumps along that trail, we didn’t see any other specimens of this species. I brought a small specimen home and photographed it with a dissecting microscope. (5). Unless otherwise noted, contents 2016 Stephen Hart.
Naked Broomrape Orobanche uniflora
http://onh.eugraph.com/plants/ouniflora/index.html
Naked Broomrape Orobanche uniflora. Naked Broomrape, in the family Orobanchaceae, is a small, hairy plant with one to three yellow to purple flowers and scalelike leaves. Most broomrapes are plant parasites, and the completely parasitic species lack chlorophyll. Some species are serious crop parasites. All of these specimens occurred at 5,000 - 6,000 feet elevation in the Hurricane Ridge area and on Blue Mountain, Olympic National Park, WA. Image 4 shows Orobanche.
Olympic Marmot Marmota olympus

Olympic Marmot Marmota olympus. The Olympic Marmot ( Marmota olympus. Occurs only in the high country of the Olympic Mountains. The marmots occupy several easily accessible areas in in the Hurricane Ridge area at or above 5,000 feet elevation, including the meadows near the Hurricane Ridge Lodge. Image 1 shows the usual view, but marmots are often relatively calm about humans, and a photographer can sometimes get the closer both physically and with telephoto lenses.
ONH Northwestern Alligator Lizard Elgaria coerulea principis
http://onh.eugraph.com/herps/lizard/index.html
The Northwestern Alligator Lizard is common along the west coast from British Columbia through northern California. Three other subspecies occur in California. I photographed all of these specimens in a sandy area strewn with beach logs and vegetation at the mouth of the Elwha River, near Port Angeles, WA. In my experience, Alligator Lizards are much shyer than Garter Snakes, and rarely allow any approach. Photo 4 shows a mating pair. Unless otherwise noted, contents 2016 Stephen Hart.
ONH Western Toad Bufo boreas
http://onh.eugraph.com/herps/westtoad/index.html
Western Toad Bufo boreas. The Western Toad is common in the western part of the United States. A Western Toad living in second-growth forest in the foothills of Washington State’s Olympic mountains ate a lot of weevils, judging by the clean, dried contents. Western Toads can be recognized by the size, white or cream dorsal stripe and the absence of cranial crests (image 6). Unless otherwise noted, contents 2016 Stephen Hart.
ONH Western Red-backed Salamander Plethodon vehiculum
